Editors’ Review
Delver is a challenging first-person action roguelike that transports players into a dark, pixelated dungeon teeming with monsters, treasure, and lethal traps. Created by Priority Interrupt LLC, this arcade game is built on the core roguelike tenets of randomized levels and permadeath, ensuring that every expedition is a unique, high-stakes experience.
Much like other genre favorites such as Pixel Dungeon or Sproggiwood, Delver emphasizes tactical decision-making and resource management in the face of brutal difficulty. However, its shift to a full 3D, first-person perspective sets it apart from its top-down and 2D counterparts, offering a more immediate and atmospheric journey.
Retrieve the Yithidian Orb
Delver’s design is a powerful homage to the dungeon crawlers of the past, leveraging its chunky pixel graphics to enhance the moody, claustrophobic atmosphere. The game expertly blends the tension of a first-person perspective with the brutal decision-making of a roguelike. You have to spend time carefully managing your inventory, deciding whether to risk a precious health potion now or save it for the inevitable boss.
The overarching objective is to descend into the deepest levels of the dungeon and retrieve the mythical Yithidian Orb. Achieving this goal requires mastering the combat system, which is based on melee strikes and a variety of spell scrolls, and learning to read the randomized layouts of the map. However, for a title focused on intense, repeated playthroughs, the audio design can sometimes feel minimal.
The level design, thanks to the randomized generation in each playthrough, ensures that no two sessions feel the same, preventing the formula from becoming stale. This high degree of unpredictability means players must constantly adapt their strategies, as they never know what collection of traps, enemies, or power-ups lies just around the next corner. The constant threat of permadeath also adds significant weight to every decision and action.
Pros
- Charming and unique chunky pixel art style
- Engaging first-person action combat
- High replayability due to randomized levels
- Unforgiving but rewarding permadeath mechanic
Cons
- Minimalistic audio design
Bottom Line
Unforgiving yet rewarding
Delver is a finely tuned roguelike experience that successfully marries old-school difficulty with contemporary action. It stands out in the crowded dungeon-crawler space thanks to its engaging first-person combat, stylish retro visuals, and the robust challenge presented by its randomized levels and permadeath system. While it keeps the experience focused and challenging, its high-stakes, rewarding gameplay loop makes it incredibly difficult to put down.
