- Summary
- This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />Serious music and film creators require software that works accurately, precisely, and that run tons of streaming files... all in real time. The odds of a tiny problem somewhere bringing down the whole system are increased dramatically with unpredictable applications running in the background, such as Dashboard widgets. But who wants to be completely rid of them? They're functional, helpful, informative, and even cute. I check weather many times a day even to see what the temperature is at a station just half a mile from me, as it's much easier than walking outside and looking at a thermometer while I'm working. So, how do we resolve this conflict of interests? DashOff! With DashOff I can turn my Dashboard off or on at moment's notice, when my system isn't being strained by 40 channels of streaming audio with effects processors on each channel. Then when it's time to get back to work, just turn it back off, and â?? POOF! â?? those Dashboard threads are gone, their RAM is back in the pool, and the CPU quits spiking from their constant checking for internet content while running unseen in the background. I've used DashOff for many years, 2 versions. Both versions still work fine in Snow Leopard (10.6.2 as of this writing), but I use the latest version simply because it's there. The only thing I am not fond of are the icons, so I put my own custom icons on it, and it works just fine that way. I keep the pair of apps in the dock, down next to the Dashboard icon. I also have a QuicKeys routine that runs them. There's not much to explain or describe about the actual operation. You simply boot the ON or OFF app, hit OK, and that's it. It's never given me any trouble. Turn your Dashboard back on and all your widgets are where you left them. What's not to like?
