Call of Duty, released in 2003, is the game that launched one of the most successful and influential franchises in the history of first-person shooters. Set during World War II, the original Call of Duty took players through some of the most intense and realistic combat scenarios ever depicted in a video game at the time.

Developed by Infinity Ward, the game’s mix of historical accuracy, cinematic storytelling, and squad-based combat set a new standard for military shooters.

Rather than focusing on a single protagonist, the game put you in the boots of three soldiers from different nations — an American paratrooper, a British commando, and a Soviet infantryman. Each campaign offered a unique perspective on the war, taking players from the D-Day landings in Normandy to the Battle of Stalingrad, and other pivotal WWII moments.

The attention to detail was remarkable. Historical locations, authentic weapons, and carefully recreated battles made you feel like you were part of a living history lesson. The missions were varied, with a mix of stealth, tactical, and all-out assault, keeping the gameplay engaging and dynamic.

Another innovation Call of Duty introduced was its focus on squad-based combat. Unlike other shooters of the time, where the player was often a lone wolf, Call of Duty made you part of a larger war effort.

Your fellow soldiers weren't just background props — they provided cover fire, called out enemy positions, and even helped direct your actions in key moments.

This emphasis on teamwork and squad mechanics differentiated Call of Duty from previous shooters like Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, which tended to focus more on individual heroics. The squad-based system laid the groundwork for the cooperative and tactical elements that would come to define later entries in the series.

While Call of Duty’s single-player campaign was a major draw, the game’s multiplayer component is where it truly shined and gained a long-lasting following. The online multiplayer modes offered fast-paced, tactical battles that pushed players to think strategically. With modes like Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, and Search and Destroy, the multiplayer laid the groundwork for the competitive gaming scene that would dominate future Call of Duty by Activision releases.

The multiplayer maps, many of which were based on real WWII battlefields, were tightly designed to encourage a mix of long-range firefights and close-quarters combat. Players could choose from a variety of weapons, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, which made for highly engaging and replayable online matches.

Bottom Line

Though it lacked some of the modern features like killstreaks and customization, the core gameplay was addictive and highly competitive.

Call of Duty (2003) is more than just a game — it’s a piece of gaming history that shaped the way first-person shooters are made today. Its immersive campaign, squad-based mechanics, and groundbreaking multiplayer set it apart as a true classic.

While modern entries in the franchise have added layers of complexity, the original Call of Duty remains a must-play for fans of the genre who want to experience where it all began.
