• A realistic boating simulator that's more than a game.

  Pros

  I love the feel of this simulator which actually teaches the principles of boat handling in all situations. It's fun and very educational. Other simulators apparently don't create the physics as does BoatMaster. All non-pro boaters will love this.

  Cons

  It's not very "gamelike." It's fun, but not a game. The authors say it's intended as instruction, and the "tutorial" emphasizes teaching, but it's so much fun that it'd be better as a game.

  Summary

  This is a really unique piece of software. I've seen other "simulators" but they're really not in a league with this BoatMaster. I'm a boater, and I find it very realistic and helpful. It's particularly good for debriefing after a bad docking experience...I set up the conditions that almost wrecked our boat, and determined the right way to dock, next time. I think that the multiple boats and kinds of boats that can be configured for trial will be useful to folks with other kind of boats. The instructions and illustrated exercises will help a novice get started, and almost any boating maneuver can be tested. Some will find the mouse-interface a bit clumsy, but in a short time I found that the keyboard controls are so intuitive that it's easy to learn. I really like this, and it's not expensive, either.
