Artweaver is an art supply store and a blank canvas all rolled up into one. With it, you can create your own masterpieces and experiment with the multitude of built-in tools. Choose from paint and calligraphy brushes, pens, pencils, crayons, and even sponges and brushes made to mimic famous artists like Van Gogh.

Artweaver's interface is very similar to Photoshop's. Creative professionals and hobbyists who are familiar with Photoshop will be able to navigate their way through its palettes and windows with no problem. This helped us get up and running with the program easily and made our experience more fun. Many of the same tools that Photoshop and other graphic programs have are included in this Artweaver's toolbox, such as selection tools, move tools, color swatches, a paint bucket, and a clone stamp. Artweaver has layers, which makes experimentation easier. You can create a background layer and then create another layer for brushwork so that you can paint away without damaging your original background layer. Each brush has a control palette that opens when you select it. Users have an enormous amount of control with each tool and can fine-tune every aspect of it with the control palette.

Artweaver installs and uninstalls easily and has a great Help file that people new to graphics software and creative professionals alike will find beneficial. It's a robust program that has many features that are usually available only in expensive graphics programs, but Artweaver is free. You can't beat that!

What’s new in version 5

Version 5 adds mirror painting to create easily symmetrical paintings; support for documents with 8 and 16 Bits/Channel; high precision 16bit brush engine for exact results especially with low opacity values; different color themes for the user interface (default, light gray or dark).

Not Photoshop, more like Painter

Pros
People are comparing Artweaver to Photoshop, but its more like the old Painter Classic. Actually a very powerful program. The airbrush feature is not quite as good as Painter Classic, but most of the other brushes are. You could easily produce high level illustration with this program with more ease than photoshop. Its a great sketching and drawing/illustration tool.

If you are an artist, download it. Use it as your rough sketch and concept art program. It opens easier that the big programs and it comes at a great price.

The only thing I have actually tried to do so far was to do a quick edit on a photo. I was actually not the right tool. Unlike a lot of other less powerful tools I have been using (like MS Office Picture Manager) it doesn't have an Auto Correct.

Great for Photo and Paint, but My favorite function is it has support for Scanners. You can scan documents and immediately export as PDF!

Has the basics - layers, adjustments (including curves), selections and filters (limited in the freeware version - but, hey, it's free). Change the brushes to yours heart's content. Good help files.
Cons
No big quibbles. Some of it isn't totally intuitive, but that's what the help files are for.

yet I glad I found this program since so many free ones can lack in the area. it is in my collection of art programs to stay. now I just got to remember how I made that special brush but I guess I could of saved it... -_- here is a short list of awesome free art programs artweaver photobie paint.net gimp 2 openoffice painttool sai they all have something to add to your art collection and they are free

The software is very easy to use for a beginner like myself. It works well with my tablet. Has all the tools I need for drawing. (Haven't tried it for photo editing really)
Cons
Has occasional glitches, which are to be expected from Freeware. Doesn't have quite the level of response I expected for use with my tablet's pressure sensitivity.
Summary
All in all, Artweaver is a very good program for someone like myself who is artistically inclined but new to the field of digital art. It's a very good program for experimenting with digital techniques and styles without the heavy financial investment that programs like Photoshop require. It certainly doesn't seem to have the photo editing features of photoshop, but that's largely because Artweaver isn't designed to be a photo editing software as much as it's meant to be a painting software (at least from what I can tell). It's worth downloading and playing around with. It's free, so if you don't like it, no harm no foul. :)
