Editors’ Review
Age of Mythology: Extended Edition is a heartfelt restoration of the 2002 masterpiece that swapped historical accuracy for divine intervention. This game remains one of the most creative entries in the RTS genre, blending traditional base-building with the raw power of mythological wonders.
While the 2024 Retold version has technically superseded this edition, Age of Mythology: Extended Edition still serves as a vital bridge for fans of the original. It offers a comprehensive package that includes the Titans expansion and the Golden Gift campaign, wrapped in a more modern Steam-integrated shell.
Witnessing the beauty of antiquity
Age of Mythology: Extended Edition’s visual upgrades in this version, such as improved water textures and global lighting, breathe fresh life into the classic Mediterranean and Norse landscapes. Seeing a meteor shower decimate an enemy camp remains visually satisfying. However, the age of the engine is starting to show, particularly through persistent performance stutters during massive battles. These technical hiccups can be frustrating when the action peaks.
Navigating the Steamworks integration is a major highlight, as the Workshop support allows for a nearly endless supply of community-created content. Despite this, the online multiplayer stability remains hit-or-miss, with occasional desync issues that were never fully patched out. It is a shame that the competitive scene often struggles with these legacy bugs, which can disrupt the flow of high-stakes matches.
Lastly, while the inclusion of the Chinese pantheon via DLC expanded the roster, it introduced significant balance issues that were never quite resolved before the developers moved on. This lack of final polish means that certain strategies feel unfairly dominant compared to the original three cultures. If you can overlook these rough edges, the core loop of summoning Minotaurs and managing favor is still incredibly addictive.
Pros
- Iconic campaigns with excellent voice acting
- Massive variety of mythological units and powers
- Full Steam Workshop support for easy modding
- Enhanced lighting and water effects look great
Cons
- Occasional performance drops and frame rate stutters
Bottom Line
Final verdict
Even though development has officially shifted to the Retold version, Age of Mythology: Extended Edition remains a charming, playable piece of history. It is a fantastic entry point for those with lower-spec PCs or players who prefer the specific aesthetics of the early 2000s. It isn’t perfect, and it won't receive further fixes, but the sheer magic of the campaigns makes it a worthy addition to any library.
