Adguard removes annoying ads, blocks malicious websites, and prevents people from tracking you online. And you don't need root privileges on your Android device to use it.

Pros

No root, more devices: You can install Adguard on a wide range of devices, since it does not require root privileges. People with manufacturer builds of Android (version 4.0.3 or higher) will have no problem getting the app.

Efficient browsing: We found that Adguard reduces loading time for many webpages. By blocking pop-ups and commercial placements, it leaves you with bare-bones content, without interruptions -- that's particularly useful if your favorite Android app is ad-heavy.

Quick setup, easily customized: Adguard is preconfigured with all necessary settings. Upon launching, you're greeted with an enormous on/off button indicating whether the application is active. Advanced settings allow you to change which ads you want to see and offer the ability to whitelist websites.

Cons

Blank space: After webpages are stripped of ads, they're left with random empty spaces, which is not the most attractive user view.

Inconvenient install: Adguard is not available through Google Play, meaning you'll have to delve into your device's security settings to allow for third-party apps and download the app manually. The extra step can be a bit daunting if you've never installed anything outside Google Play.

Bottom Line

If you can't stand seeing ad banners or pop-ups take up valuable screen real estate, then Adguard is a must-have. Beyond the initial installation, the application is very straightforward. You can manually set filter rules and whitelist to exclude relevant ads. Adguard Premium offers improved ad filtering, expanded protection against phishing sites, and a license to use it on your PC. But the free edition is plenty for most users.

This review was written using a version of Adguard Premium and tested on a Google Nexus 9 running Android Lollipop 5.0.1.
