Crashes repeatedly, does not save files properly, unable to open doc in other apps
Summary
I have used AbiWord for years with PCs. I like to have an extra program besides Word in case there are issues. Today I used it and had so many issues that I don't know as I will try it again. I may do so to see if there is an update - but if it fails again, I'm done with it on Mac. It's too bad because it seems to work well for PCs. When it does close unexpectedly, at least it saves the docs so I can open them elsewhere. That was not the case today. All I had was a garbled document that I had to remove the coding from so I could salvage it in Word. I also use OpenOffice so hopefully there is a decent Mac version. Use this program at your own peril! I could not believe that despite saving every paragraph I still wound up with a garbled mess.
Kerning is a little odd.

Pros
Runs on all my machines, even the laptop running OS X 10.2. It's lightweight and simple to use.
Cons
Kerning is a bit off. Extra spaces show up, and sometimes letters are not visible, although they are in the document. Large documents cause this program to crash.
Summary
For the money (free) AbiWord is a great little word processor, especially if you have to use it on an older laptop. However, f you can get something more stable, do.
Bad typeface

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
The previous version worked very well but this one has the most dreadful typeface. Letters run together, the word spacing is erratic, various strange versions of letters appear. I sent a bug report but to negotiate the geeky bug report form is practically impossible. The writers of this programme, while I appreciate they are trying to do the public a favour by providing an alternative to Msoft Word, need to wake up the fact we are not all computer programmers.
Buggy but functional

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Hey it's free and loads faster than NeoOffice and dosn't eat up as much space and RAM. It's still buggy but overall it dose what I need it to do so I'm not complaining. Seamlessly reads every .doc file I have, quick to load and only 10MB. I'd recomend to anyone who needs a stand alone basic WP.
getting better but problems

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
on my g5 desktop, I found a noticable delay between the time I clicked on a menu item and the menu list opening. there were also repeated appearances by the spinning beachball, although no crashes. big improvement with this version, but I think there are still a few glitches to be solved.

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Version 2.4 with OS X 10.3.9 has problems at least on my computer. The toolbar looks weird and the application will not open files- endless beachball spinning requiring Force Quit. Nothing logged into console.log or system.log, though.
Version 2.2.10 worked splendidly, except that it did not read column formatting in Word .doc files correctly. The ratings are for 2.4 only and don't take previous versions into account. I think this has been a good product with some glitches that slipped into this version.
Great alternative to MS word and open office

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
When I downloaded this app I didn't think I would like this program this much. The best WP free or paid for by far! Can't figure out how everyone is looking past this one. This is a must for any Mac owner hands down. Works with ever file ext including .doc files, exports and imports those .doc files seemlessly. Starts up faster than NeoOffice and is more athesticly appealing also. Looks alot like Appleworks but more functional. Would highly reccomend to anyone who needs a stand alone WP.
