VirtualDub is a video capture and processing utility licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL). It is designed to be a general utility that can trim and clean up video before exporting to tape or processing with another program. It does not possess the editing power of a general-purpose editor such as Adobe Premiere, but is streamlined for fast linear operations over video. VirtualDub has batch-processing capabilities for processing large numbers of files, which you can extend with third-party video filters. VirtualDub is best at processing AVI files, although it can read (not write) MPEG-1 and handle BMP image sets.

very useful if you work mostly with AVI files, like i do. can be used with a lot of video effects. the bitrate and frame per second can be specified, and the frame size too. it obviously splits video to delete what you don't want. some of the effects that are compatible are: contrast, sharpness, smoother, color balance, crop (you have to use the Null Transform effect for it), rotate, tint, brightness, and seriously many others. you can also save your preferences for those effects. it renders the edited video with effects(slower), or without any(faster).
Cons
some third-party effects will not work, and actually cause the program to crash, but that's to be expected. can't import WMV or FLV or other format files to work with, as it's an AVI video editor. can't import several AVI files at the same time unless they have the same bitrate and possibly frame size.
Summary
very useful for AVI video, although it's not perfect. it renders video moderately fast. not too easy to learn at first, but not that hard either. the options are there but you have to find them. it opens up pretty fast. you don't even have to install it as it's a zip file. definitely recommended.
64bit version does not work on my Win7 Pro 64 computer.

When I run the program and it asks for a video, I get the following message and that's as far as the program will go: Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'xvid' {unknown). VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW)compatible codec to decompress video, DirectShow Codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable. Since most of my videos are in the avi (xvid) format, this program is completely useless.
Summary
I was very disappointed because I had heard good things about this program, but since it requires other codecs and does not provide them nor tell you what they are and/or where to find them, it is a totally useless program.
Installs toolbars and changes your home page.

Pros
I did not have a chance to try the product as I spent my time uninstalling the toolbar that was added, and changing back my home page and default search in my browser.
Cons
In the installation process I used "Custom" and then made sure to turn off all optional 3rd party downloads and changes. Despite this the ToolBarUpdater process was running, and I had to uninstall StartNow Toolbar. My default browser search was changed from Google to Bing, and the Bing Toolbar was installed on my browsers (Firefox, IE).
Summary
I am very upset about software downloads that force Bing to be my default search and install any kind of toolbar. This is unethical. And this happened despite specifying these items to not be installed. I cannot recommend this software, be cautious. I thought CNET did a better job of vetting software installs which is why I have relied on them for years as my main software download site.

Pros
I tried loads of AVI joiners and when it came to streaming them through my xBox they were either Jerky or the audio was not in sync. VirtualDub is free and every AVI i have joined has worked perfectly (it's pretty quick too).

Nothing at all.
