Editors' Review

The Weather Channel packs a ton of weather-related information into its weather app, putting conditions, forecasts, maps, and videos only a few taps or swipes away.


Location-specific weather reporting: On the app's home page, see your current weather conditions, including temperature, percent of rain, and wind speed and direction. Hourly, daily, and fifteen-day forecasts are a swipe away. The app does a nice job of presenting information, and forecasts and conditions are easy to grasp.

Loads of weather-related data: Much like you'd see on a Weather Channel broadcast, the app is packed with visually appealing radar maps, road and traffic conditions, health and activity reports, and lots of weather and news video.

Set alerts: The app can display real-time alerts for weather-related events. Set alerts for significant weather forecasts, rain and snow in your area, lightning strikes, government-issued warnings, pollen reports, and more. You can also set alert times, so the app won't disturb you while you sleep.

Pervasive ads: supports the free version of its app with ads. The ads, however, feel intrusive and can take up nearly half of some screens. The ad-free version is $3.99.

Not customizable: You don't have a lot of control over what you see on the app's screens. Instead of being able to organize information for how'd you like to see it, you need to scroll and tap to find what you're looking for.

For community-sourced weather, the app points you to Weather Underground: If you want to see personal weather stations, webcams, and crowd-sourced reports, the app directs you to its Weather Underground app, which handles community-generated weather news.

Bottom Line

The Weather Channel's Weather app for Android does a nice job of bringing much of what you'd find on the broadcast channel to your phone. If you enjoy the channel's approach to weather, you should feel right at home with the app. For those just looking for current conditions at a glance, other apps -- including those from Weather Underground and Dark Skies -- are up to the task.
