  Operating system Windows 7 I received the following error message : Stuffit_14.0.1.27A_EFGJ_x64.exe is not a valid Win32 application There is no where within the CNET site that I could find to correct the problem. I would be better off on a Merry-Go-Round when trying to get some help, because that's what you get.I am currently running WinZip on my system. Was attempting to download another program, and told to download StuffIt. Which I never was able to do.

  Pros

  I needed to download even though I already have winzip and wrar because my client saved the compressed file as a sitx. There was a weird forward where I ended up linked to the stuffit site. Upon install, it installs a bunch of instamail crap and add-ons to my internet browser. VERY SHADY IF YOU ASK ME!

  they embedded instamail software with the install. also had a bunch of add-ons on my browser.

  Tell your client to start saving as ZIP!

  None. Maybe if I could install it, I might see some. Don't expect help from the home page. It leads you around a circular chase. Never able to even send for help. That page didn't work either.

  Installing a nightmare. Unable to accomplish it after hours of frustration. Being compulsive, I hated to give up but did after hours wasted (I'm reasonablly experienced user.)

  I purchased this as an upgrade from version 9.0, because i was quite happy with that version. Although there are no imporvements I can see at frist sight, what I like is the option to create SEAs (Self Extracting Archives). The Euphoria ended, when I discovered that my copy was still in Demo Mode. Upon entering the serial number supplied by Smith Micro, it was rejected as invalid. The Forum / Knowledge Base of Smith Micro states a solution, but that doesn't worl.

  I would not reccomend this program to anyone. It isn't for the average user nor is it particularly user friendly. It isn't as customizable as even the old dinosaur ZipIt.

  Absolutely none (Why would CNET assume Stuffit has 10 characters worth of good qualities? It doesn't.)

  Resets file associations Doesn't extract files properly

  Even if you choose not to associate certain archive extensions with Stuffit, it will still reset the settings for ALL of them, so that your computer no longer knows what to open them with. It's only a minor inconvenience having to tell it to open my files with WinRar again, but no commercial product should make that mistake. When I tried to use it, it didn't work properly at all. I extracted the file, and it gave me a file with a size of 0, an empty file. Needless to say, software that doesn't do what it is supposed to do is not worth trying, never mind buying. And if it did actually do what it was supposed to do, there is still the fact that it costs $50.00. If I am sending a file to someone, why would I force them to pay $50 for terrible software when WinRar works great, is widely used, and is basically free? Sorry, no. Stuffit is just terrible all around. And did the CNET editor even try the software before giving it a 4 1/2 star rating? Seriously, this is the worst piece software I have tried in a long while. If you are considering download it, just don't. Whatever .sit file you think you need to extract, forget it. It isn't worth the time, bandwidth, or frustration. Avoid this piece of crap like the plague.

  SIT files that can be read across Windows, Mac, Unix, and Linux Compresses multimedia smaller than WinZip Works with multiple file formats besides SIT and SITX

  A little expensive Don't know if the Windows version is buggy or not Slightly slower than WinZip

  Summary

  I just installed it on my Mac OS X Leopard and it works really well. I've been able to compress files that are readable in all of my OSs. And why do people say that SIT files don't work with the new version? They worked perfectly for me. I'm guessing that many of these haters are WinZip and WinRar fanboys, because they don't know a good product.
