  Summary

  Construct is already a great app but has lots of growth ahead. The development team is very good about fixing bugs soon after they pop up and listening to user feedback. Anyway the only bugs that come up seem to always be pretty minor and often have workarounds for those of us too impatient to wait a couple days for them to fix it. There have already been some very good looking games produced with this software. Half the fun is getting to play the games that other users post on the forums. The tutorials, examples, demos and forums make it easy to learn. You can have your first game finished the same day you download it. If you're looking to make your own games without shelling out big bucks for a development suite this program is your dream come true.

  Pros

  Construct's strengths lie in two main areas: power, and ease of use. For the beginning game designer or hobbyist game maker interested in creating 2D games there really is no better choice out there. Construct makes it easy to begin creating hardware-accelerated, DirectX 9 driven games right away. It's event coding system is logical and easy to understand, but flexible enough to create complex interactions with all of your game objects. And for the advanced game developer there is integrated Python scripting.<p>There are also many built-in functions that allow the designer to get a jump-start on making specific types of games, such as a solid platform engine, vehicle movement, and even a 2D physics engine. Creating game art is as easy as using the built-in image editor or importing your own artwork into backgrounds or sprite animations.<p>Another great feature is the price... free. Not only is Construct a great tool for developing games, but it offers features that aren't even available with some of the more popular paid game-creation software. You'd be hard pressed to find a comparable product that has the same perks for less than a hundred dollars. I've tried a few similar programs - Game Maker, Multimedia Fusion 2, and Torque - and they don't stand up. While Torque has more power behind it, Construct is still superior in the ease of use department. MMF2 is over $150 and lacks scripting and modularity of code, and Game Maker just doesn't have the power.

  Cons

  Currently Construct is in beta. Some parts of Construct aren't feature-complete, and there are still bugs here and there. Nothing that could harm your computer, but it can be frustrating at times. Still, the developers are releasing new builds and bugfixes at a steady rate, so if you don't mind a little beta-testing then I encourage you to become an early adopter.

  Construct is great. It runs on fairly low-end systems - I have heard tell of it running on a P3 - and supports all kinds of effects, movements, and best of all it's open source. The Python scripting is really just a cherry on the cake.<p>For all the little flaws, Construct is definitely worth at least looking into. It has a collection of pixel shader 2.0 effects, but if you want your games to run on sub-2.0 systems they can be disable literally just by saying they should be, and only for when the system is sub-2.0. It's very backwards-compatible in that respect. The planned SDL implementation is really going to put this program through the roof in terms of usefulness.

  Cons

  It's still a little buggy, but it's being updated constantly. There's generally very few bugs which will actually interrupt your workflow - I've only ever had a single crash, and I know exactly why (it was my fault too). Unfortunately, it's only really 2D as of yet, but with SDL planned in the future that's likely to change.
