TinySpell is a free tool that checks spelling in any program. Accessing the program is as simple as right-clicking on its icon in your computer's Quick Launch tray. It displays a tiny window, making it easy to use alongside other programs. TinySpell will alert you if you misspell a word, or you can type a word directly in its window to check your spelling.

Most computer programs have spell check built-in, but in some programs the spell check is cumbersome to use or not easily accessed. TinySpell can bridge that gap. We thought it was quite handy to have the small TinySpell window running within easy sight and grasp. It can check passages of text copied and pasted onto new clipboards, which is another good feature. You can add words to its dictionary and you can set the program to beep whenever you misspell or mistype a word. TinySpell caught all of our spelling errors, and with most words, a window popped up with suggestions for the correct spelling. Only when we misspelled a word thoroughly was the program unable to provide us with an alternative.

TinySpell has a Help file that includes information about hot keys and how to use and configure the program. The program's Web site also has instructions for using the program. The program's default language is American English, but dictionaries in other languages are available for download on its Web site. We had no difficulty installing the application, but when uninstalling it, a 212KB folder was left in our program files. We weren't bothered by this--TinySpell is a program worth keeping.

"Serious Bug with Visual Studio"

May 06, 2015  |  By alchokem

 |  Version: tinySpell 1.9.53

Pros

Works fairly well most of the time.

Cons

Locks up all debug sessions in Visual Studio 2013 100 % of the time. Author was informed six weeks ago of this problem but has yet to release a fix.

Summary

If you're not using Visual Studio 2013, you may be okay.

"Great program!"

January 01, 2013  |  By bobby_31329

 |  Version: TinySpell 1.9.44

Pros

It's a real time spell checker. Your through typing it through correcting. Non of that do you want to spell check before you send. No Brains needed to operate like all programs in this field it doesn't know slang but you can teach it just add to dictionary and he keeps right on trucking install and forget about it the only time you will remember it's running is when it beeps at an error or the colored text pops up with the spelling correction. Very fast smooth worth every cent you paid for it and then some. I have used it for several years and like it very much hard to get use to it not running 24 7 365. Never has given me any problem never locked up all around 100% Satisfied. works with everything I have, Chat, Messengers all browsers.

Cons

No CONS for me all + + tinyspell+

Summary

You get more than a bang for your buck.

"Excellent Spell Check"

September 24, 2012  |  By EricVonZipper

 |  Version: TinySpell 1.9.43

Pros

Very tiny footprint used on disc, very small memory useage. It flags misspelled words as you type, then click to see several suggested words, usually has the correct word first on the list.

Cons

It just flags incorrect words as you type, doesn't show misspellings in the entire text.

Summary

Resource usage - A
Footprint - A
Ease of use - A
Overall Grade - A

Updated on Sep 24, 2012

Using it in IE9, other browsers - YMMV.

"TinySpell leaves a very tiny imprint."

May 07, 2012  |  By luckylanny

 |  Version: TinySpell 1.9.43

Pros

Small size, non-intrustive and works in almost every program on my computer. Neat program for its size.

Cons

Little hard to get used to spell checking word by word, since I usually only spell check after at least a first draft.

Summary

Try it. It is easy install, easy uninstall and you won't even know it is there most of the time.

"Simple and Efficient"

March 14, 2012  |  By bill3333

 |  Version: TinySpell 1.9.40

Pros

1 I am sure the negative comments by some people, are the result of their unfortunate circumstances, as TinySpell has an excellent reputation. I have happily used TinySpell for years, and not found anything to beat it. As with all software, you need to learn its idiosyncrasies, and configure it to your liking.
2 It is a spell check as you type, and you can configure it to respond to your preference, so check out the sound and colour settings.
3 It does not do an overall spell check, but you can do that by copy and pasting into Thunderbird, or an online spellchecker, for example.
4 Ideal for Notepad or Wordpad, and you configure it to only run on programs that need it, so it does not fight programs that already have a spell checker, as Thunderbird or Firefox.
5 As it spell checks as you type, it rapidly improves spelling.

Cons

6 New words or slang can be added to the dictionary.
7 You can set it to automatically start on boot if you wish, by using CCleaner Startup Manager, and just directing to to C:\Program Files\tinySpell\tinyspell.exe
8 Its ideal companion thesaurus is WordWeb which is also simple to use, or for something a bit flashy try The Sage.

I wish it would show the correct spellings with a balloon above the word, and then be able to click in the balloon to do the correction, instead of having to go to the Taskbar to do this, but I suspect this would involve a whole list of complexities, so they have kept it simple, in the interests of keeping it free.

Summary

Be grateful to KEDMI Scientific Computing for their kindness, in providing you with this spell checker for free.
