Nowadays, it's not uncommon for each of us to have multiple devices for listening to and accessing music, including an iPhone, iPod Touch, and/or an iPad. And it's important to have a program that will easily allow you to transfer files to and from devices without any kind of hassle. DiskAid offers users a means to do this, but the trial version we tested would not let us complete a file transfer.

When installing DiskAid, we encountered our first hiccup: It requires that you have the newest version of iTunes installed, so you'll have to do that before getting started. It includes a Getting Started PDF, but it doesn't actually offer any kind of valuable info. It does include a Help feature that takes you to online User Guides. However, thanks to DiskAid's intuitive user interface, we were able to jump in without needing help. Once our iPhone 4 was plugged into our PC, its contents were instantly imported to DiskAid, where they appeared just as in iTunes, broken down into Artist, Album, Genre, and so on. We started by copying our music to a folder we created on our desktop. Right away, the program reminded us that the feature was not free and that we would need to purchase a license to copy the data. However, it gave us two options - Buy DiskAid and Not Now - that gave us the impression that we could proceed, but that proved not to be the case. After clicking Not Now, we were presented with a menu that let us select which files we wanted to copy (Music, Movies, TV Shows, etc.) and where we wanted to save them (to iTunes or to a folder). We selected the Music file option and To a Folder of My Choice for our save location. Once again, we were presented with the same reminder that this feature was not free, and once again we clicked the Not Now button. But this time, we were stuck and could not proceed to the end. So, sadly, we have no way of knowing if the program actually copies files as promised.

We were pleased with DiskAid right up until the end, but because of the licensing issue, we can't recommend it as a viable iTunes file transfer tool. The program installs and uninstalls cleanly.

Editors' note: This is a review of the trial version of DiskAid 5.41.

"Not worth it for simple transfers"

January 23, 2014  |  By peterungar

 |  Version: DiskAid 5.47

Pros

Users who transfer many files at a time seem to find it convenient.

Cons

If one knows how to transfer using iTunes (see below), it is not worth buying and having these programs on your devices. In addition, one user wrote that transferring a group of text files resulted in the group being combined into a single text file. I myself suspect another kind of damage. I think it may have been when I uninstalled FileApp from my iPad that most of my Pages files on the iPad were erased. Fortunately, they were on my laptop too.

Summary

I have an Ipad 2 with IOS7 and Windows7 on my desktop and my laptop. I do not want to use Dropbox and the internet to transfer files between two devices on my desk. ITunes controls transfers, to block files purchased by someone else.

FileApp (or FileApp Pro, which I bought) and DiskAid which comes with FileApp and is its helper on the PC, provide a convenient interface for iTunes. One can copy and paste, or drag, files from Windows to FileApp's file storage or that of another app on the iPad, or the other way, as in Windows itself.

I thought the $4.99 I spent on FileApp Pro was well worth it although even the free version can do the simple transfers I was using it for. A surprise came when I tried to use DiskAid to copy my photos from the iPad and was told I had to register DiskAid for $29 to do that. Actually, one can open the iPad in My Computer and find the folders with one's photos and videos and copy them without FileApp or even iTunes.

I wish I had learned the following sooner.

In iOS each app has its own file list.

For transfers in either direction, connect device to your computer. Start iTunes if it does not start by itself and select the device in iTunes. Click Apps. in iTunes.

After this, to transfer to computer:

Below File Sharing, from the list on the left, select the app on your device that you want to transfer a file from. From the list on the right, select the file you want to transfer, and click "Save to." A window opens, select in it where you want to save the file, and click Open. The file is saved.

To transfer to app:

Below File Sharing, select the app you want to transfer to, and click Add.
In the window that appears, select the file and click Open. The file is transferred.

I should say, after I installed DiskAid on my 64-bit Windows 7 desktop, I had lots of system crashes. After I uninstalled it and restored the system to an earlier state things got back to normal. This may have been a coincidence and it did not happen on my 32-bit Windows 7 laptop.

Updated on Jan 23, 2014

Since Google led me to learn how to transfer files using only iTunes, I no longer consider this program to be valuable for the simple transfers I do.

"Tremendous time & hassle saver !!"

June 05, 2013  |  By lorikirn

 |  Version: DiskAid 5.46

Pros

Simple to execute
Covers all aspects of iPhone (media, apps, contacts, etc)
TREMENDOUS time saver
Files saved with meaningful nomenclature

Cons

None - it is amazing.

Summary

This is not free if you want to actually transfer files; however ... it is WELL worth the money for what it does. NOTE: Students with a valid .EDU email can get the software for free.

If you ever wanted/needed to copy all your stuff from your iPhone in one shot rather than go into each app to email or sync your data ... this app does it all. Even better, it saves it in a well defined naming system so you don't even have to go back and rename the files to know what they are.

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I think it should be able to do one feature: it should be able to have a "select all" to copy all contents of texts or whatever in one shot ** while keeping the files separate ** This software has the option of copying only selected files (texts, voicemails) one at a time. If you want to do a one-time copy of everything, the software will do that, but it will lump everything into one file. Instead of having a file of all A's texts, a file with all B's texts, and a file with all C's text, if you did the select all ... it would put A, B, and C's text all in one file.

Aside from that ... it literally saves me hours and hours - no joke!
