Publisher's Description
From Wooden Brain Concepts:
iDupe is designed to process duplicates and dead tracks in iTunes in a smart way. iTunes now has a "Show Duplicates" command. But it is of limited use. First, it offers no way to remove duplicates while keeping one version of a track. Second, there is no good way to identify which tracks are actually duplicates as opposed to different versions of the same song, the same song with different bitrates, etc.
iDupe tries to deal with this problem intelligently, making a number of judgement calls. It will remove absolutely unambiguous duplicate entries, but use the check marks in iTunes to uncheck the duplicates it thinks are good candidates for removal. Potential duplicates will be ranked according to a number of criteria. It will evaluate whether it is likely to be a loose single track, which version of an album to keep, as well as other considerations. Once you review its choices in iTunes, iDupe can then remove unchecked tracks in a selection from the playlist and from the library and move the corresponding files to the trash, according to your choice.
What's new in this version:
- Reorganized main Steps buttons, separating out "tools" that need not be used in any of the steps.
- Now shows all status messages as dialogs when "show warnings and alerts" is on and Growl is not installed.
- Diacritical marks and case are now ignored when identifying duplicates.
- Fixed bug involving scanning duplicates when ignoring album and track number.

"Almost deleted all my music. Check the trash"
Version: iDupe 2.9
Pros
None I can think of. I even wasted money on the shareware fee and it still sucked.
Cons
- moved almost all of my music collection, that I spent 10 years building, to the trash.
-slow and plodding
- strange tandem actions with Itunes I didn't really understand the purpose of.Summary
I don't know how it decides which files and tracks are duplicates, but it does a ****-poor job of it. It moved 90% of my music to the trash. After the program said it was finished and I should empty the trash, I noticed itunes only had a couple dozen tracks now and my hard-drive was very empty. It didn't just remove duplicates, it tried to get rid of everything.
The shareware fee doesn't make a difference and the program still asks me to pay for it after I already did.
