Editors' review

Zoner Photo Studio 17 surpasses other premium photo and graphics suites with great functionality, plenty of features, and an intuitive layout.

Pros

Intuitive organization: Zoner Photo Studio's modular interface opens with the default Manager view, which places tabs at the top, as well as the Import, Viewer, Editor, and RAW modules.

Helper programs: You can designate a helper program for every file format Zoner Photo Studio handles.

Monitor calibration: A built-in monitor-calibration tool ensures accurate color rendering and shading.

Good stuff: Zoner Photo Studio has too many features and extras to list. Some standouts: Audio Notes, 3D and Panorama image capability, JPEG extraction from files, custom keywords, and geotagging (including GPS data from Google Earth).

Cons

Too different: Some users might find Zoner Photo Studio's way of doing things a bit too different for an easy transition.

Bottom Line

Zoner Photo Studio 17 stands out from competing photo and graphics editors in the $90 range, which serves both pros and skilled amateurs. Its useful extras and intuitive layout make it more than just another Photoshop clone.

Editors' note: This is a review of the full version of Zoner Photo Studio 17. The trial version is limited to 30 days.

"Excellent software, i have Pro Version 16 and FREE?"

    May 16, 2014   |   By melen001

    Version: Zoner Photo Studio 16.0.1.5

    Pros

What can i say, this a very powerful tool and after a few tries it's user friendly so it's easy to use. Has tons of features and options. Like the tabs that it supports....

    Cons

I see that you have to pay to get he full version but i have the 16 Pro Version... i just don't remember what offer they had form the free license.... it's not Photoshop but it works fine....

    Summary

Of course it's not Photoshop but it does a more than a decent job for the above average photographer... i'm happy with it and it's my go to editor.....

"HIJACKs registry, default filetype and program settings"

    March 25, 2014   |   By keglined

    Version: Zoner Photo Studio 16.0.1.5

    Pros

    No monetary loss.

    Cons

The difference between this claptrap and a virus is the Terms of Service Agreement. When you click the "I agree" required to install this program, you're allowing Zoner to change your default image settings, ignore repeated requests to stop automatically looking for updates, and basically turn your computer into an overpriced Zoner nag screen.

    Summary

The advertised functions of this program are mediocre--a completely unremarkable image editor, and there are plenty of better alternatives--but the program's annoying hijacking and re-prioritizing of your default settings is obnoxious, to say the least. Ever had a piece of software so bad you find yourself wishing you could literally -- physically -- let its developers know how you feel? Yeah.... this is one of those POS programs.

"All I need in one - excellent!!"

    January 12, 2014   |   By JayN1975

    Version: Zoner Photo Studio 16.0.1.5

    Pros

I've been using Zoner Photo Studio since version 12. The newest version 16 is exactly what I need. It follows my photo-workflow perfectly and helps me to get my photo archive organized and all pictures easy to find. Also the editor part is very powerful and exceeds my need. Really love the HDR stuff. RAW module could be a bit faster I'd say, but I don't care much about RAW files anymore since my camera produces perfect JPGs.
The unlimited web-album Zonerama is a nice extra feature too.

    Cons

A separate quick photo viewer could be nice. Don't need to open the whole program every time.

    Summary

Probably the best free photo software ever. And if you decide to pay for the PRO version it is definitely worth every penny.

"Appears to give good competition to Adobe"

    January 04, 2014   |   By THCarl

    Version: Zoner Photo Studio 16.0.1.5

    Pros

Like the tabs and its easy way to shift from view to edit. Haven't used it much but it seems to be a keeper.

    Cons

My only con to this point is the small font size used, even though it is necessary to get provide space sor all the commands.

    "Pretentious"

    December 19, 2013   |   By bhima2

    Version: Zoner Photo Studio 16.0.1.4

    Pros

Pretty, features are attractive, but you PAY for it.

    Cons

This is an arrogant, pretentious and self-congratulating bit of software. It is hard to tell at first glance what the heck it really is. Maybe *some* advanced photographers will fall for its bait, but, frankly, I find that it has hijacked my .jpg and similar extensions and apparently blocked PSP8 from using them. The thumbnails are tiny - unreadable, and I am going to get rid of Zoner as soon as possible.

    Summary

You want a headache ? Get enmeshed in Zoner.

    October 12, 2013   |   By cpmjohn

    Version: Zoner Photo Studio 16

    Pros

    Really nice layout structure.

    Cons

With the structure comes a learning period

    Summary

Great low-cost replacement for Photoshop...and much easier to use than Picasa.

    "quite satisfied"

    September 27, 2013   |   By AeneasWilliams

Version: Zoner Photo Studio 15 build 6

    Pros

This software is quite good; I easily added special effects in my photos. It is very much user friendly and I edited my photos according to my choice and have not face any sort of errors during the process.

    Cons

If you want to use the full cool features of the software then you have to buy it.

    "great free program!"

    September 09, 2013   |   By startreksuite

Version: Zoner Photo Studio 15 build 6

    Pros

Love the tabs that change from viewer to editor. I am used to acdsee and the layout is nearly identical. I can do many cool adjustments, add some interesting effects here as well. I upgraded my free account to the home addition with Bits du Jour deal of the day, so I can further upgrade to pro for about 40 dollars.

    Cons

Have to pay extra for tilt shift effect, using 8bf filters, tone mapping and hdr effects. I'll survive without it, but would have been cool otherwise. Not sure if I'll go back to ACDSee, but it's a worthy alternative.

    Summary

Truly worth your time if you want a free photo organizer with some great editing tools.

    "Counterintuitive and not for amateurs"

    June 20, 2013   |   By modest-proposer

Version: Zoner Photo Studio 15 build 6

    Pros

It's free, once the 30-day trial of the full version runs out, though the switchover process is a bit arcane.

    Cons

Creating jpg's from what's in your clipboard isn't straightforward. And I can't modify an image and then paste that modified image elsewhere without saving it first.
-- I'm an amateur at this, and found the UI of Microsoft's Picture It! quite intuitive, but not this program. I've also tried Picasa, MAGIX, Chasys Draw, and some others. The last 2 are a little easier to use than Zoner.

    Summary

I'm disappointed in this program. It had a good cnet review when I downloaded it, but I have found it exasperating to use.
