Editors' review

Originally known as Foxmarks, Xmarks takes the original, bookmark-synchronizing concept behind the plug-in and mashes it with a style of Web site discovery reminiscent that should feel familiar to users of StumbleUpon or Del.icio.us.

Xmarks maintains its utility in this major update, retaining focus on synchronizing your bookmarks so you can access them from any computer running Firefox. A simple start-up wizard guides you through the set up, after which it indexes your bookmarks. After installing Xmarks on a second computer, it gives a choice to merge or junk bookmarks from either rig. New to this version are an expanded set of Options for configuring how and when the add-on will synchronize, synchronizing passwords as well as bookmarks, and creating profiles to better manage disparate sets of bookmarks. Other tweaks include hosting your bookmarks and passwords on your own Web site instead of Xmarks', rudimentary encryption management, and determining syncing up or down.

The big news about the update to Xmarks are the site discovery features. It now installs an icon on the right of the URI bar, which you can click to reveal more info about the site you're on and other similar sites in your browsing history. It will also highlight the your Google results based on how many other Xmarks users have bookmarked them. While this may seem scattershot, Xmarks claims their users have marked more than 600 million Web sites--that's a lot of data to mine. If you don't trust Xmarks' data encryption, you can opt to not sync passwords, but there's little doubt that this is a bold attempt to bring Xmarks--finally--into Web 2.0.

    "Be careful..."

    October 20, 2012   |   By jmahun

    Version: Xmarks for Firefox 4.1.3

    Pros

    Concept is a great idea.

    Cons

    Execution less than perfect.

    Summary

Before you install XMarks, go to https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/xmarks-sync/ and read user's reviews of the add-in. While it received great praise in the past, check all the comments posted in the last 3 months or so. I wish I'd done that before I installed it. I ran into many of the same problems and not just with Firefox. I use Chrome and Internet Explorer also so was looking to have consistent bookmarks across three different browsers on three different computers. Wow, what a mistake. I lost whole bookmark libraries, browsers froze up, and worse, syncing sometimes removed local bookmarks instead of uploading them for my other browsers/computers to access.
I maybe could have played around with XMarks' settings, but I don't want to - I'm tired of dicking around with software trying to make it do what I want. I want something that runs transparently maintaining an online bookmark library I can access with any browser on any computer. XMarks' doesn't inspire confidence, at least not in its current version.

"By Far The Best thing I every downloaded"

    November 27, 2011   |   By zebra148--2008

    Version: Xmarks for Firefox 4.0.3

    Pros

Can not say enough about this product. I bought the premium, for the few dollars a year it cost me, already saved me twice from major disaster. Simple easy to use, and peace of mind. I am going to have to reform my computer soon, but will know all my stuff is safe and saved easy to get back......

    Cons

not sure is there is anything bad/con

    Summary

One of the best things I found, easy, hardly any setup time, and works without a hitch every time I close my browser. I use FF 8 and with all the updates never have to worry about bookmarks or passwords........all there waiting for me. You should give a try, sure you have installed worst things, sure you will love after you try it.

"Best password saving program I've ever owned."

    January 07, 2011   |   By Aberlaine

    Version: Xmarks for Firefox 3.8.7

    Pros

Not only does Xmarks save my passwords, but it also saves information I can use to fill in forms online. And it generates practically fool-proof passwords for your really private stuff.

    Cons

    I haven't found anything I don't like about Xmarks.

    Summary

I no longer have to worry about my passwords when I travel. I can find the "in the cloud" wherever I have Internet access. I'm so glad Xmarks was saved by LastPass.

    Version: Xmarks for Firefox 3.5.11

    Pros

I am so frustrated that there are no pros

    Cons

the one con is you can't stop the syncronization which jams firefox 3.6 so it is useless. It also takes too long. It needs a exit or shutdown

    "The best free bookmark organiser!"

    January 24, 2010   |   By DR .No

    Version: Xmarks for Firefox 3.4.5

    Pros

FREE, very lightweight and it will save the day!

    Cons

    Nothing, a must have!

    Summary

I use several machines and this cracking piece of software keeps all my bookmarks in sync! I use both the IE & Firefox versions, as I access the Internet via all the machines on my network I find manually keeping bookmarks updated is a chore. Simply create an account, choose what settings, install the software your done. Very easy and the best!
