CNET Editors' review
It's one thing to burn a DVD disc and another to create a DVD that anyone can pop into a tray and play. For making DVDs out of your videos, Xilisoft's AVI to DVD Converter is a good place to start. It converts not just AVI files but also MPEG, MPG, M2V, VOB, and DAT to DVD disc, DVD folder, or ISO file. The flexible output options mean you can create DVD disc images that you can store on your hard drive yet play like regular DVDs (with a disc-mounting tool). But AVI to DVD Converter does much more to help you make high-quality DVDs, such as creating menus, making clips, adjusting video quality, and adding audio and subtitles. You can set options like autoplay and extract images to use as DVD titles. AVI to DVD Converter is compatible with all DVD formats as well as Windows 8. It's free to try, though the trial places a watermark on output files.
AVI to DVD Converter's user interface opens with a Getting Started wizard outlining three easy steps for creating and burning DVDs: add files, select a destination from a drop-down menu, and start the burn. But the program hardly lacks for help, if you need it, the Help menu accesses a full standalone manual and an Online Help feature as well as a Feedback and Support link. Nearly everything you need is right on the program's interface, though under the Tools menu you'll find the Settings, which includes Output settings like video standard, zoom, and aspect ratio as well as a CPU tab that lets you customize how many processor cores the program uses for conversions.
We added some files, which appeared in AVI to DVD Converter's main view with tag data, folder links, and title images. Selected items also appeared in the program's preview pane, which includes a basic control suite for playing clips, and also in a scrolling Menu panel that let us select templates for creating our DVD title menu. Burn speed depends on your drive, but the final product played normally, but with a watermark. AVI to DVD Converter stacks up well against the free tools.
Editors' note: This is a review of the full version of Xilisoft AVI to DVD Converter. The trial version has watermark on output.
