"Great product, almost there, but a show-stopper bug."

August 01, 2008  |  By Manas Tungare

 |  Version: XTabulator 1.1.3

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I've used XTabulator for several weeks for handling comma-separated data, and I'm quite satisfied with it. It fills a niche where a spreadsheet is overkill and a text editor doesn't quite cut it.

There is, however, one major bug that prevents me from being able to use it fully. If the CSV data contains commas within each column, the data is usually enclosed in quotes. But XTabulator does not parse such lines correctly, resulting in splitting the data from one column into several.

Here's an example: (the line numbers are for demo, not in my data.)

1: Column 1 Data That Does Not Contain A Comma, Column2Data, Column3Data
2: "Column 1 Data, That Contains Commas, But the Whole Thing is Quoted, So This Shouldn't Break Into Four Columns", Column2Data, Column3Data

Line 1 is parsed correctly, Line 2 is not. I contacted Bartas Technologies Support over a month ago and opened a ticket, but it has gone unanswered.

I had been looking for a simple easy to use interface for managing small worksheets, and this was exactly what I was looking for.

"Really fills a niche"

Excel changes data sometimes, and BBedit's default tab stops simply don't do it. On the PC, sucking data into an Access table of memo-fields gets old. This is very much needed.

"A Good General-Purpose Tool"

Summary

Hoyd, I think you misunderstand the point of this app. This is something you use to read and reformat ANY KIND of tabulated file (a table of data) in a human-readable way. With such a broad scope comes a price. If the file has some custom format it's up to you to tell it what that format is, it won't read your mind. FYI, a true comma separated value file has fields separated by commas and records separated by newlines. EOL delimiters DO NOT separate fields in CSV files as you said.

I've been looking for something as 'open' as this for awhile. Sometimes you just need a tool that lets the human do the thinking. Some other 'solutions' I tried simply refused to open the file if it decided it didn't look right, forcing me to open it in a text editor. If you work with huge files, you know how hard it is to spot problems or rearrange things. This app arranges what's there so it's easy to understand and lets you change it how you see fit. It's not Excel or a relational database. It's a basic editor. Plain and simple.

I do agree they should add drag and drop for custom row sorting but you can drag to reorder columns. You CAN add records (and columns) though. The bottom line is that it does a whole lot for $10 even as a first version. I highly recommend it.
