Publisher's Description
From Microsoft:
If you are not running Windows XP SP1, install SP1a for security and reliability updates to the Windows XP family of operating systems. There is no benefit to installing SP1a if you are already running Windows XP SP1. We do not recommend that you install SP1a if you are already running SP1. Windows XP SP1a is almost identical to Windows XP SP1 except that the Microsoft virtual machine (VM) is removed in SP1a.

"Necessary for "legacy" XP upgrade/update..."
Version: Windows XP Service Pack 1a (SP1a) 1a
Pros
Downloads & installs easily and rather quickly.
Cons
No longer supported, so must upgrade to at least SP2, which should be done anyway. Must have this service pack before you can upgrade to either this or SP3. This is not necessarily a negative thing!
Summary
Upgrading XP gradually by starting with this SP1a, then going to SP2 and finally to SP3 is probably the best approach when dealing with a system that has none. Not many out there, but there are enough that this should be remembered. This operating system may be the best so far from Microsoft and they know it, even though they may not admit to it directly. Each service pack dealt with flaws encountered but also added a lot of innovations and improvements that make this such a user-friendly and professional powerhouse. It will be around for a long time, and that is a very good thing; keep it updated and clean and enjoy using it until it can't be used anymore...

"IT WORKS ....HERE'S HOW"
Version: Windows XP Service Pack 1a (SP1a) 1a
Pros
It works great!
Cons
nothing yet
Summary
I have a legal copy of Windows xp w/o any service packs, but because I had installed it several times over the years Microsoft refused to let me install it anymore.
I could install it though, but couldn't get the service pack updates.
How I got around this....First I did a clean install, then I installed service pack 1a that I downloaded from this site. (I downloaded it on another pc and put it on a flash drive). After the install I ran Norton System Works to clean up the registry. Now I was able to go to Microsoft's Windows update site and started getting all the other up dates. After service pack 2 was installed I manually requested ie 6. After that was installed Windows update continued to give me all the updates including service pack 3. This ALL took place in less than 2 1/2 hours. So glad I read all of your comments before I attempted it. -
