Windows Movie Maker 2 is so easy a child could use it--an incredibly patient child born to filmmaker parents who didn't mind restarting this application every few minutes. From the get-go, you get the feeling that this isn't going to be an easy program to like; Microsoft's installer doesn't play nice. It gives the user no input on program location or other options. The plain interface promises simplicity with drag-and-drop storyboard options, though during testing, it was more like drag and freeze. The program typically froze while importing MPG video files. If importing worked, Movie Maker 2 would quit responding when clips were placed on the storyboard. On the rare occasion that our testers made it to the storyboard, the program would freeze when adding one of the numerous effects. There were so many hurdles to creating a short video that no editing seemed preferable to using this software. What's more, uninstalling the program was even more tedious than installing it. It should be no surprise, then, that we can't recommend this freeware for any user.

Version: Windows Movie Maker (Windows XP) 2.1
"Never trust anything that is free from microsoft!"
Pros: None at all.
Cons: Just doesnt work! Zero stars, if possible.
Summary: When I got my first pc in 2000, it came with WinXP and Movie Maker 1. It didnt work then, (crashing all the time) and doesnt work now. With only 2 versions in 10 years, no wonder it's still crap. And, does it still force you to create movies only... read more >>

Version: Windows Movie Maker (Windows XP) 2.1
"Better than Windows Live Movie Maker"
Pros: Able to record video from a camcorder.
Cons: Limited import and export type selection, can not download for Vista or Windows 7, recording is usually at a low bit rate.
Summary: Overall I still like it better than its Windows Live version. The ability to record from camcorders is good for helping preserve old videos. However the recording quality is limited (except for AVI) to a low bit rate and its a .wmv file. For users n... read more >>

Version: Windows Movie Maker (Windows XP) 2.1
Pros: None. Would be great if it worked, but since it doesn't, there are no pros to offer.
Cons: Program freezes repeatedly to the point it's unusable, just as the CNET editors noted.
Summary: POS. Don't waste your time. You will only be frustrated.

Version: Windows Movie Maker (Windows XP) 2.1
"Would be good ... if it worked"
Pros: Simple interface.
Cons: I, too, am unable to get the program to work consistently. Freezes. Refuses to load clips (I have 1.5g RAM and it complains "not enough storage"). Really too bad about this. What's up with those clowns in Redmond anyway?
Summary: More frustrating than a night at the convent.

Version: Windows Movie Maker (Windows XP) 2.1
Pros: can't think of any, it's Microsoft product.
Cons: - locks up quite a bit
- need to reboot computer at times when the project doesn't load just to free resources or open task manager to exit program
- can't find project files at times - when program does eventually loadSummary: Unfortunately as with all Microsoft programs, Movie Maker is incorporated into the OS and eats up resources (similar to IE, Outlook, etc)
If Microsoft had the foresight to create software that could run on its own, then this program could... read more >> - See all 43 user reviews Write review
