Editors' review

This tool lets you control your office PC from home via the Internet, or your colleagues' computers via the LAN. WinShadow displays the desktop of the controlled computer, which you can work on using the keyboard and mouse as usual. If you want to make a presentation in a remote classroom or meeting, you can disable local controls. The program stores connections as files in a folder, but you can also access the program through a system-tray icon. You can copy connections to other locations and share them. You can use the program to transfer files or clipboard contents. Small-business users will benefit most from this simple and inexpensive product.

"Fast, and can be made undetectable"

    September 18, 2004

    Version: WinShadow 2.0

    Summary

I tried it on my w98 boxes on a LAN, and it installed easily. Almost no delay in the remote actions, and several times I forgot I was working on a remote box, and almost deleted the wrong things, thinking I was on mine. I'm sure over a dsl it would be slower. Only complaint is that in order to make it invisible on the controlled box, you need to remove 5 registry keys, in addition to removing the obvious visible folder, etc.

"Uninstall prevented my computer from booting"

    August 28, 2004

    Version: WinShadow 2.0

    Summary

I have been experimenting with remote control programs at home, and this one looked interesting, until I found that Microsoft Remote Desktop to my home pc no longer worked. A message informed me the file shwGinaStub.dll, a part of this program, was preventing the connection. Subsequently, I uninstalled the program at home, and on reboot got a message saying the above named file was missing and presented only an option to reboot the pc. Last Known Good failed, as did Safe Mode - same result. Luckily I had a Norton Ghost image ready to save the day. Proceed at your own risk, you have been warned!

"maybe it is good for others"

    May 01, 2003

    Version: WinShadow 2.0

    Summary

In order to use this product I think you will need to use the dial-up or use it inside a local network. If you deal with firewalls somewhere, just forget.
The documentation is VERY poor, it is not explaining how to use it from start to end! Also, they never mention the word firewall.
Good luck if you wish to try it!

"Great speed, even for dial-up users."

    February 20, 2003

    Version: WinShadow 2.0

    Summary

This product is ready to go out of the box. I installed on home and work PC, then connected using my existing remote access. Though you can use serial/modem access. Its secure and has a great interface. The speed over dail-up was incredible. I can only imagine the speed over cable modem, someday. A must bye, especially for parents who needs to work from home sometimes.
