Waterfox is a 64-bit version of Firefox. The browser's developers modified the Firefox source code specifically for machines running 64-bit versions of Windows. Software designed for 64-bit Windows editions can take advantage of faster RAM and processing speeds and greater stability in 64-bit systems. Just converting Mozilla's source code for 64-bit Windows doesn't do enough to make Waterfox stand apart from Firefox and other Firefox-based Web browsers; other unique tweaks help it exploit the speed of 64-bit systems. As the Waterfox Web site states, speed is its mission.

When we first opened Waterfox, it displayed our bookmarks and other personal data from Firefox. When it comes to looks and extras, Waterfox doesn't disappoint in a side-by-side comparison with the latest Firefox release. Waterfox has a family resemblance to other Mozilla-based browsers, with a dark blue Start button instead of Firefox's orange. Otherwise, Waterfox looks and functions like Firefox, including its various customizable features and options. Our add-ons, extensions, and plug-ins worked in Waterfox, too, including Microsoft's Office and Silverlight plug-ins. Waterfox also has regular updates.

We could tell with just a few quick trips to familiar sites that Waterfox is fast, so we visited some of our favorite browser speed test sites to see how it stacks up against the competition, including Firefox and our current default, Chrome. For the most revealing results, we threw Peacekeeper's HTML5 torture test at each, pitting Waterfox against the site's Chrome benchmark and our own copy of Chrome.

This online benchmarking tool separates the smartphones from the gaming desktops with a series of increasingly grueling tests that took some 5 minutes to run through. Waterfox bested Firefox but not Chrome, both in speed and HTML5-rendering capability, though the results were close enough to make it a matter of choice. Raw speed tests with CNET's Bandwidth Meter produced much closer results. Chrome held a consistent edge, but Waterfox is fast, too. Subjectively, it "feels" fast, which might be the advantages of 64-bit operation. In any case, we like Waterfox a lot. If you prefer Firefox but run 64-bit Windows, give Waterfox a try.

"Used to be great; now garbage"

January 26, 2016  |  By wombatmatty

 |  Version: Waterfox (64-Bit) 34.0.4

Pros

There aren't any pros anymore.

Cons

With each new release of Waterfox, the performance for me goes downhill, even on fresh installs with a fresh operating system. I had this one twenty different machines and I'm now uninstalling them all to use Firefox, which now has a 64 bit version.

Waterfox used to be fast, that is until the past few versions. It seems like the developer tried getting a little too fancy starting with the charity search (now ended). Each time I open the browser, search settings seem to default (even on fresh installs). Sometimes when searching using the upper right hand search bar takes me to a completely different search engine OR to my search settings. Pressing search again does what it should have done the first time.

There are way too many crashes and freezes now for my liking. Downloads very often fail for no reason with the inability to restart unless I browse to the link and click it again. It's not a particular website.

The waterfox process is also staying stuck in memory.

"Very poor clone"

 |  Version: Waterfox (64-Bit) 34.0.4

Pros

Has none !!!

Cons

Uses all Firefox files! If you change settings on one it changes the other?????? and on top of that it uses 3 times the space Firefox does WTH? I know cnet love anything Mozilla but they should step up on this clone and rate it as junk!

Summary

Do not install this clone is one of the poorest I have seen!

"Nice browser but too many freezes"

 |  Version: Waterfox (64-Bit) 18.0.1

Pros

Seamless transfer from Firefox. Works quickly. Instant import of favourites, etc.

Cons

Why is it that now, after some 6 months of running Waterfox, it insisting on freezing so often? Probably twice or three times a day the browser becomes unresponsive - usually once I open more than 5-6 tabs.
Truthfully its a bloody nuisance; a major irritation that I could do without and it's not apparently a result of viruses or other malware.
Much as I prefer the speed, appearance and ease of Waterfox over Chrome there are moments when I seriously consider ditching Waterfox (and Firefox for that matter) if only to acquire a more stable platform.

Summary

Possibly the best option compared to Chrome, Firefox and IE but not without a few bugs.

"buggy and slow"

 |  Version: Waterfox (64-Bit) 18.0.1

Pros

better than firefox version 43.0, in that all the text appears on nearly all websites

Cons

crashes if you open more than 4 tabs and even with 3 tabs open it is very slow. It appears to be Firefox from 5 years ago, which may be the problem.

Summary

Firefox version 39 works, as does the latest version of Microsoft IE, Waterfox does not work, neither does the latest version of Firefox.

"best browser yet"

 |  Version: Waterfox (64-Bit) 18.0.1

Pros

Fast as lightening, my system is not slow at all. I have a good pc, brand new, almost empty, lots of memory and ram, and on 32 bit firefox the browser was slow, i have skype running all the time, 2 games, and normally at least 5 or 6 browser windows, ventrilo and music playing. Firefox cannot handle that well, but I installed waterfox and instantly it was superfast again. Even IE was slowing up but waterfox handles all my activity and keeps my browser superfast. i am well impressed!

Cons

none. its fab

Summary

fantastic, get it.

"Very Impressed!!!!"

 |  Version: Waterfox (64-Bit) 18.0.1

Pros

Can handle many tabs with the 64-bit version. It automatically imports from Firefox.

Cons

I have just installed but it works just like Firefox but actually uses the 64-bit capabilities.

Summary

The tabs automatically restored my crashed Firefox session. Everything is the same as Firefox but Waterfox actually uses the 64 bit capabilities of most processors today.

 |  Version: Waterfox (64-Bit) 18.0.1

Pros

I saw my CPU Gone down.
I use 7 different FF profiles but all are now WF.
One profile is dedicated to youtube and it Waterfox just cut down my extra load of Video watching.

I am heavy user of computer and run softwares simultanously and everything going smooth. If you are just a normal computer user you may not see any difference but heavy users will.

Cons

Don't know any because computer performance is my top prority even I have to sacrifice one or two junk plugins which promise they work but who knows.

Summary

Get it guys this for all. check my profile and download free PC speed up and security under my homepage. This is a gift from me.

"Works very well"

September 13, 2014  |  By jhs39

2014-09-13 13:49:49  |  By jhs39

 |  Version: Waterfox (64-Bit) 18.0.1

Pros

Exactly like Firefox but 64 bit. Operation is very smooth. Opens pages quickly. Installation copies Firefox preferences and extensions so this looks and feels exactly like the version of Firefox you are currently running.

Cons

Not sure that it runs better than Firefox. It seems to but that might be a placebo effect--I expect a 64 bit version of Firefox to run faster and smoother so it seems like it does.

Summary

When I installed this I thought there was a mistake and that I was still running Firefox--that's how seamless the transition is from Firefox to Waterfox. I have been using this for about a week and have not noticed any problems at all--everything opens fast, there have been no page crashes or compatibility issues. My go-to browser had been Opera but there were some performance issues on certain web sites. I have had no similar issues with Waterfox. I stopped using Firefox a while back because it seemed bloated and sluggish compared with Chrome and Opera. I'm not noticing anything like that with Waterfox.

One more note: Waterfox does not come with any spyware or bloatware. The web sites where people are downloading the program are adding the extra crap. If you aren't downloading directly from the Waterfox web cite then just make sure to choose advanced installation and choose not to install each bot of crap-ware when the permission windows comes up. I'm not sure why some people still don't understand what is going on but if you choose standard install you are giving permission for all the crap-ware to be installed on your computer. This stuff comes from the download site and is not the fault of the program you are trying to download.

"Still like Chrome better"

August 31, 2014  |  By astro599

2014-08-31 00:22:40  |  By astro599

 |  Version: Waterfox (64-Bit) 18.0.1

Pros

It does move quickly between web pages, but not any faster than Chrome.

Cons

Didn't want to open at first, and scrolling is a nightmare. In fact, the scrolling is so bad that it's worse than Firefox and I'm uninstalling Waterfox now. Sticking with Chrome, and keeping Firefox as backup.

Summary

Not an improvement on Firefox, and still not as smooth as Chrome. They may have fixed some bugs, but there are more to take care of.
