This video splitter, merger, and format converter has an interface that looks like it hasn't aged since 1997. Fortunately, it's been laid out in a clean, legible manner, and that goes a long way toward usability.

WM Converter deftly handles conversion to WMV and QT formats from most of the major standards. These are preformatted for the Zune and the iPod, which means that the predefined bitrate will seems low for desktop use of the output files. Batch conversions are no problem for this Ugly Duckling of an app, and the merging tool was effective during our tests, as well. The program can also extract audio tracks from videos and record them as MP3s.

Although the interface is readable, a cleaner layout would be really helpful in identifying the various conversion buttons and other options. We would also like to see more customization choices in future editions.

Improved conversion for all file formats. Version 5.1 fixes a problem when converting to WMV format.

Very Capable Video Converter Can Rip DVD VIDEO_TS/VTS_01_1.VOB, etc. files NO max time limit on conversion or ripping Not one of those FALSE Freeware Utilities NO commercials, or never-ending sign-up reminders

None... even criticism of simple GUI is not valid This old-time program works as freeware, unlike competitors...

Don't look at number of downloads for other ripping or video conversion /w. THis oldy, but goody still way better in my opinion

Does what it says it does without a lot of unnecessary bells and whistles. Easy enough to understand, even for a novice like me. Works just fine with my Windows 7 version of Movie Maker.

I can't seem to figure out how to output the files to a folder of my choice.
Summary
I use this mainly to convert AVI to MP3 to use for making simple videos on Windows Movie Maker. It does the job just fine. It's easy to understand, with basic choices for output file type and quality. There are also choices to split and merge, but I haven't tried those yet. If you need a basic converter, I would definately recommend this.

Pros
This is the only one I have tried that is fast and easy to use. It takes mpeg and even converts your avi files to a smaller avi file. All without losing any quality! That is something that none of the others were able to do.
