"GREAT program to view file contents in ASCII or Hex"

    February 12, 2013   |   By Abter1

    Version: V - The File Viewer 9

    Pros

    1) The key purpose of V is to look at (but not open) huge files, especially flat ASCII files. If you need to see what the heck is inside a file, but don't want to open it in a text editor, V is perfect. You can also look at an unknown file, and often determine what kind of file it is (exe, xlsx, dat, ...)
    2) V is very quick, because it's not loading the whole file. V only shows the first chunk (default is 8 MB, but adjustable) of the file. You can browse through the subsequent chunks 1 at a time, or skip to top or bottom.
    3) no max capacities that I know of (I've viewed 35 GB files).
    4) you can control line wrapping, and view the file in either ASCII text, Hex, or a split screen with both.
    5) V is a handy general file manager, with dual panes, search functions, file copying, etc. Normal mode when you double click is you view the file contents, but you can set it to open a file in its normal program if the extension is recognized (.xlsx, .doc, .pdf, .mdb, .SAS, .jpg).

    Cons

    1) V is a viewer, NOT an editor. Thats not really a Con...it is what it is. You can sweep-and-copy from V and take the data elsewhere, but if you can't change the file in any way within V. If you need to edit a file, V can call the editor you designate as the default from within V. Many may pick NotePad, WordPad, or any other simple editor. For dealing with large flat files I like SkimEdit (free ware here at CNet), but there are no doubt many others you may want. The original default is notepad (I think).

    Summary

A can't-live-without utility for me; anyone who works with lots of ASCII data, will fine this a godsend.

"A good file finder and viewer; similar to Explore."

    January 20, 2012   |   By grosswh

    Version: V - The File Viewer 9

    Pros

It uses the standard Explorer format, and has some interesting ways to find files with code lines. It won't read pdf files unless you install pdf iFilter; but that's true of every file finder/viewer.

    Cons

Doesn't uninstall cleanly. I had to manually remove it. It's not significantly different from Explorer, so it may not be worth using. In Explorer for Win7, if you want to find a filename that contains a word in it, type -
    name: myword
If you want to find any file with a specific word in its contents, then type -
    contains: myword
If you want to find any file with a specific text string, type -
    contains: "my string
(you only need the quotation mark at the beginning)
That solves most of my search issues, so V gave me no added value.

    Summary

A good file finder/viewer but not significantly better than Explorer.

"V The File Viewer is one of my absolutely must-have apps"

    June 04, 2008   |   By GeorgeB3

    Version: V - The File Viewer 9

    Pros

File management is a critical daily process for me. With both single and dual pane views, V either gives me all the tools I need, or easy access to 3rd party tools; you can use the mouse, but I prefer the easy keyboard access provided for routine tasks (for example, easily copy a file name or the file's complete path to the clipboard). Text or hex file viewing is a major strong point, including file tailing for log files. Integrated support for 4-DOS style file comments is a major plus. I could go on-and-on, but instead I strongly suggest downloading a copy and review the "Summary of Features" in the help file for a complete (and better) listing of everything it does.

    Cons

There's only one thing I don't like about this program: it doesn't work on a Mac, and probably never will.
