CNET Editors' review
UMPlayer stands for Universal Media Player, and this open-source freeware aims to be a universal media solution. With hundreds of codecs, it plays most video and music files as well as audio CDs, DVDs, SHOUTcast, and live radio and TV from tuner cards. Of course, it plays YouTube videos; in fact, it has a built-in YouTube player/recorder feature and search field on its toolbar. With a skinnable interface, hot keys, subtitle sync, and the regular free updates of an active open-source project, UMPlayer poses a serious challenge to VLC, MPC and other popular free media players.
UM Player
As an efficiently configured desktop media player, UMPlayer's user interface can only be so different from other free players without looking freakish, but its attractive layout has enough simple differences to make it stand out without screaming, such as its subtle but effective highlighting of the title and counter section or its user-selectable toolbar that includes a screenshot tool, DVD player, quick access to files and Web links, and access to the program's Preferences, as well as the aforementioned YouTube search box. You can quickly toggle this toolbar off for a more traditional look, but we suspect many users will find it handy for daily use. The Help menu includes FAQs, Tips and Tricks, and Web links; the Skins menu offered six styles with a link to get more.
The proof is in the playing with digital media, and UMPlayer didn't disappoint, even in direct side-by-side comparisons to VLC, our default media player. We didn't run through the entire list of supported formats for each player; suffice to say that each does most of what the other does, and just as well. Few users will notice any difference for most file types. It comes down to a matter of choice. If VLC has a fault, it's that it just does too much. If you like the idea of a free, open-source media player that can handle just about anything but find VLC a bit overwhelming, give UMPlayer a spin.

"A substitute Player for Windows Media Player"
Version: UMPlayer 0.98
Pros
The player will play a host of formats
Cons
No way to speed up the film. They should have taken a page from the Nero 8, 9, and 10, and provided for a speed increase or decrese in the projection rate.
Summary
An adequate player for no cost but others costing money aremore satisfactory

"Not Very Impressed."
Version: UMPlayer 0.98
Pros
Well, it does play, but not much else.
Cons
Constantly wants to down load scrip files? What's that all about any way? Freezes up a lot. Basically, I found it more annoying than anything.
Summary
I like Jet Audio, and KMPlayer. They simply work better. To be honest, I never got the chance to find out what kind of features UMPlayer has, since it was always in a constant state of downloading script files. I just deleted it and ran.

"Does Not Load Videos in OS-X After Search"
Version: UMPlayer 0.98
Pros
If it works, it is the all-in-one powerful solution for just about any video / audio codec you throw at it.
Cons
When launched in OS-X (10.8.2) Mountain Lion, I do a search via YouTube, try to play a video, UMplayer will NOT even load a video. Main interface screen is greyed out and does not even allow for pressing of the playback button. Drag and dropped my own videos onto UMplayer and ditto. No PB whatsoever.
Summary
Basically, since I can not get any video to playback whatsoever, I must say the product is totally useless for me as much as I would love to use it based on what it can theoretically do. But, no playback = no further comment.

""PANAMA SOUNDS GREAT""
Version: UMPlayer 0.98
Pros
Player interface looks real nice.
Fairly easy to use.
Cleaner than most installs (no unwanted applications, plug-ins, or bugs)Cons
Crashes and locks-up sometimes.
Summary
This is a good multipurpose movie and music player. It works okay on my computer with WMV, MP4, MP2, MOV, MP3, and WAV files. I didn't try the weirder formats. This application did lock-up a couple of times, but it's not so bad for free.

"Amazing - Just what i needed!"
Version: UMPlayer 0.98
Pros
Plays almost everything. I love the hotkeys, space for stop, arrows for fast forward, v for subtitles, Love it! And the clean and sleek interface is very beautiful.
Cons
There seems to be a bug in playing avi files. They play just fine (no out of sync video or anything) but i'm not able to fast forward or play from random locations. I have to start from the first and not somewhere in the middle. Hence 4 stars because this gets really annoying especially with videos one has already seen more than twice.

"Outstanding audio/video player."
Version: UMPlayer 0.98
Pros
Plays just about any video or audio file.
Cons
This is not really a bad thing. With the default settings, when this program encounters an error in video/audio coding, it continues on with the image-sound out of sync. This can be corrected in the options, but then the coding errors become obvious. It does not self-correct as some other software does.
Summary
This open source software and is probably the only video or sound software you will ever need.
