• Works well for a more than basic editor and viewer

  Haven't read all I need to in instructions, but it does a good job out of box. It's free.

  Cons

  Learning curve is a bit different than other image editors, I've used and use. Can't find an edit button but, apparently, every change one makes to an image creates a separate image as I found out with Expose' when I viewed all open windows. Seems the edit button is the Close button on each iteration of the image being worked on. No Preview button to see the change until one makes the change, but viewing all iterations of the image will show the differences made. On start up, no window for the application. You have to go to Menu Bar to open any image.

  Summary

  I need to spend some time reading more of the instructions to feel comfortable with this. Works well, but not the most user friendly image viewer, editor. Report back after I get used to it or toss it.

  This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />i really like the simplicity and elegance of this application. it loads fast with minimum screen clutter. so far, it's been able to open anything i've thrown at it. it's got a lot of functionality to it that preview lacks. also, i love that it displays all the info at the bottom of the frame and that it automatically starts a slide show when you drop a folder of images on it. i also like the application xee another japanese freeware gem with similar functionality.

  This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />I discovered ToyViewer (TV) through Charles Moore's Applelinks (www.applelinks.com). This is an excellent image editor and viewer. The program is small and yet does alot of the color corrections and effects that I'd be using Photoshop for. It also has more utilities than iPhoto 5's image editor. At first the lack of an "Undo" function in TV baffled me, but then I realized the advantages of how TV handles editted images. The developer's website has a detailed manual for new users of TV. I now use TV most of the time to edit my images instead of using iPhoto 5. However, it's still easier to perform color balance corrections in iPhoto 5 because of the Levels histogram. If only TV also provided a Levels histogram, I would not need to use any other image editor other than TV.

I've been using TV for over a year, and for viewing my collection of thousands of jpegs there is no substitute. Light image editing capability is nice, but without batch processing in TV, I usually end up doing my editing in Graphic Converter. This works great, and rather than being a dig on TV, it's actually a testament to the powerful specialization of TV. I consider TV to be a tool, no, a weapon, for the sole purpose of image viewing. Drop a folder of jpegs on TV's dock icon, and BAM, a hands-free slideshow is a mouse-click away, with full-screen presentation and auto-scaling to fit jpegs to screen size. Beautiful. The GUI is a perfect example of the most elegant minimalism. I love how I can drop a folder of jpegs on TV's icon, and it opens a small panel with all the controls I need for viewing a slideshow of the folder's contents. It's the only viewer I've found that conveniently scales jpegs up or down to fit the screen optimally. There used to be an issue with how slideshow control windows floated above all other windows from all applications--not anymore, thanks to a responsive developer!
