CNET Editors' review
When Word is too much and Notepad isn't enough, you might want to give TextPad a look. The text tool requires little drive space, but comes with a surprising array of unique features that are especially useful for programming tasks. A group of simple formatting tools such as indenting, line numbering, character transposing, and condition-based word wrapping help keep code in order. It offers excellent customization features, letting you create formatting and code coloring specific to whatever language you're programming in. Those looking for a robust tool for low-end desktop publishing will be disappointed, however. TextPad works best for programmers and other people who need a full-featured tool for plain text.
Publisher's Description
From Helios Software Solutions:
When just getting the job done is work enough, the last thing you need is to waste time having to learn yet another computer application. Your experience with other tools should be relevant to each new application, making it possible to sit down and use that new application right away. That's why TextPad is so popular. Whether you simply need a powerful replacement for Notepad, a tool for editing your web pages, or a programming IDE, TextPad does what you want, the way you would expect.
What's new in this version: Version 6.2.2 has fixed where IME conversion for some single byte characters from DBCS code pages was incorrect and When a user tool failed, the message on the status bar was not displayed correctly.

"Awesome for data validation"
Version: TextPad 6.2.2
Pros
I use for manually validating data files, prior to converting to a new CCSID. There is NOTHING else that provides this level of functionality - without tweaking the data. My files are hashed, so ANY change to things like CRLF in unacceptable. This tool lets me find the problems without creating new ones.
Cons
Options are not always intuitive and I never read manuals.
Summary
When you know someone puit a non-breaking space or French-Canadian character in the file SOMEWHERE, just gotta use Textpad.

"Finest Kind of editor!!"
Version: TextPad 6.2.2
Pros
Has a multitude of 'bells and whistles' that swiftly become direly needed attributes! I have used this program for about twelve years in lieu of Notepad and Word Processors (MS Word, Word-Perfect, etc.) for VERY effective text processing, including source code(s) for nearly every language without the crippling limitations of Notepad or Wordpad. It also lacks the gross and hindering overhead of the Major word processing programs. It runs faster and more accurately than either set of supposed contenders. I use it for programming, and for all other text processing. I especially like the ability to simultaneously process EBCDIC, ASCII, and UTF formats without special attention(s.)
Cons
None that I have seen, yet. Some of the additions have addressed issues that I have not seen in my work, but were needed. While I admit using a mild "tunnel vision," I do recognize that no product on the market is completely perfect.
Summary
I am more than happy with TextPad, and I thank my lucky stars for finding it, and its sister, WildEdit. I have no reservations at all in recommending TextPad to ANYONE who spends more a few minutes per month editing text files!
