I have previously given a positive review to Notlight, another Spotlight replacement. But I find Spotlaser both easier to use, a more intuitive interface and producing better results than either Spotlight or Notlight. Price is donationware.

The manual with 1.2 is thorough. The improvements still in development will make Spotlaser great. The developer probably deserved a larger donation than the one I made.

Owing to Spotlight's many limitations, unless and until Apple responds to criticism it will be up to 3rd party utility developers to add much-needed functionality. Spotlaser 1.1 now works and deserves encouragement. Currently worth a 3+ star rating, so I rounded up to 4. Note: Since the Spotlaser panel currently lacks the usual buttons to close or minimize, use command-H to minimize to the dock.

Though my initial experience with SpotLaser (1.0) was a disaster, it looks like version 1.1 cprrected all the major issues affecting the initial release. The new version works as advertised. It opens a Spotlight search with all the proper cirteria selected. Very nice indeed! It makes Spotlight a lot easier (and faster) to use. As in any Spotlight search, you can then create a smart folder for the result, etc... Nice!

Initially, I had the same experience the other folks (the ones that gave Spotlaser only 1 star) did... nothing would happen when I click on the "star" at the bottom of the Spotlaser window. I think what may be wrong is that this happens to people who have not created any saved searches yet. Once I saved a search in the finder (outside of spotlaser), Spotlaser worked as advertised. It switched me to the finder, where I found two windows: The top window showed the results of my Spotlight search, and the bottom window showed the Saved Searches folder, with my newly created search named "Spotlaser 20051202 012536" Opening up that search file in BBedit, I can see it's a correctly formed xml file, with the spotlight search criteria defined as the query string. Very interesting, and possibly quite useful. My main complaint at this point is that the developer has provided no way to launch the search (that I can see). Spotlight still responds to its default keyboard shortcut, and Spotlaser doesn't appear to have one of its own. Also, there are no preferences, which means you can't customize the apps behavior in possibly useful ways. Still... great beginning!

There is a big starburst at the bottom that generates a saved search on the desktop, but I hope that is not all this app does. I don't see why this would be any advantage over spotlight even if it did something. If I could get a search entered before the search started, that would be an advantage. (In Spotlight, if you type "S" the Mac works very hard to show you every file containing the letter S.)

And there's no access to the many kinds of specific metadata; for example, you can't use this app to find a picture greater than a certain width. Icons are mislabelled (tooltips are wrong). Finally, the app doesn't actually do anything: no results appear from a find. Blap! Thanks for playing.

Every file on your computer has name, location, date and contact information, but it's not up to you to remember all this, that's what computers are for! With hard drives getting bigger every year, more and more files are saved every day.

But where did you save them? Can you get to them easily? If you're not careful in saving your files where you know you'll find them, you could have a hard time re- trieving them. You may know part or all of a file's name, information that a file contains, or other related information about a file. But how do you use this information to your advantage?

The in-built search functions of Mac OS X (Spotlight) give you the capability to find files, but without the flexibility and ease you may want. That's where Spotlaser comes in.
