Combining media broadcast channels and media distribution under one roof, SopCast is a lightweight way to check up on streaming video that comes from sources of a possibly dubious nature.
There are three main components to the program. Live Channels are streaming television channels mostly from China, Japan, and Korea. VoD Channels are videos-on-demand, and MyServer lets you broadcast media from their computers to other SopCast users. We couldn't get the VoD options to work, but the Live Channels pulled in cartoons from China, sports from Europe, and music videos from Brazil. You can add channels to a favorites list, adjust the screen size, and more. However, refresh rates were slow, and video playback often froze.
Users can log in anonymously, or create an account--which is required to distribute your own content. Although SopCast can be fun, stability issues and the limited broadcast channels might keep it from reaching a wider audience.
Publisher's description
From SopCast :SopCast is a simple, free way to broadcast video and audio or watch the video and listen to radio on the Internet. Adopting P2P (Peer-to-Peer) technology, it is very efficient and easy to use. Let anyone become a broadcaster without the costs of a powerful server and vast bandwidth. You can build your own TV stations comparable with large commercial sites with minimal resources.

Version: SopCast 3.2.4
"Good quality, no spyware or viruses."
Pros: Sopcast offers great video quality and has very few of the cons that were reported. It CAN make ask.com your homepage, but you have to select a box to let it do so. A careful download should prevent this. I ran a virus scan and it came up clean.
Cons: I had trouble minimizing the video when I was trying to access other websites. The video box was small but maintained at the forefront of my screen, no matter what I tried.
Other than that I am very surprised at how good of quality it offers.Summary: I am a huge soccer fan and as any American-based fan will tell you, it's impossible to find every game on cable. When I used Sopcast I found that it had great video and sound quality, the feed never cut out, and it was entirely safe.

"Program is ok, but it has adware in it!!!"
Pros: None to mention, didn't keep it installed long enouth to see any.
Cons: When you install it from the linked download it will automativcally install Ask.com and change your homepage to Ask.com. It doesn't ASK you if you want to, it is all automatic.
Summary: Program is just like others out there, but any time a program piggybacks and installs itself without even asking and makes changes to your internet settings it is not worth it.

"DON'T DOWNLOAD--contains malware"
Pros: None-see cons
Cons: When I download this program, it began by running slowly and then it launched a whole set of fake virus scanning products that ended up locking my computer and forcing me to reload windows.
Summary: I know this is very popular software, and that's why cnet should do a better job of making sure that its stuff is both up to date and safe to download.

Version: SopCast 3.2.4
Pros: Takes a very short time to download.
Cons: Doesn't install (Vista).
Summary: It wouldn't install. It kept telling me to close my browser even when my browser wasn't running (I checked in 'processes') and all my email software and IM were off. There is a help site for people to post questions about trouble they have, but no-o... read more >>
