This free screensaver brings a photographic slide show of planets and asteroids to your desktop. After installation, it displays the screensaver properties window, which allows you to select from a variety of slide-show transitions. It also plays a MIDI of the theme from the Star Trek movies. Some may find the music charming, others a bit cheesy. You can mute the audio if you want. On the whole, the screensaver looks amateurish. The photographs themselves are adequate, and there are a lot of them (which accounts for the large 4.58MB download), but the dull solid-color backgrounds don't provide much excitement. The captions, meanwhile, are set in an archaic typeface that doesn't fit the mood. The shortcut the screensaver places on the desktop refers to an unavailable resource. If you're really interested in space, Solar System Screen Saver may have some appeal, but you can find many more impressive celestial screensavers by hunting around this site.Publisher's description
From Crogon International :This free screensaver uses high-quality photographs of our solar system. You will see the sun, all the planets, many moons, comets, and asteroids. All photos include captions and can be quite educational. Also included are a mutable soundtrack and transition effects.

"Yeah, pray you age so well. ^^"
Pros: I helped develop this little gem back in 1998. It has been basically untouched since. It was designed to be 1) simple and 2) stunning. It's quite amazing it has held up so well, what with the ridiculously higher resolutions that we have these days.
Cons: Hasn't been tested on Vista yet.. but nobody is actually using Vista, so who cares. ;)
Occasional nut-balls like the guy below.Summary: It's reason for existing as freeware was to combat all the jerks ripping pictures off of NASA then selling screen-savers for $10-$25 a pop. It goes without saying it was an overnight success. Thank you and you're welcome. :)

Version: Solar System Screen Saver 3.3
Pros: Simple install, took 30 secs. l use it on an older HP dv1000 laptop without a single issue.
The photographs are authentic and nice. Some of them are a bit dated but hey! It's free! The settings interface is straightforward and effective too.Cons: Some of the pics aren't widescreen, but with space-black backgrounds it really isn't an issue.
The music is....ahem....moogishly old, but luckily it can be switched off. Too bad there's no way to add your own music instead.Summary: Great little app. It's going in all my computers. Perfect for folks who aren't too tschnically savvy but appreciate beautiful pictures and well thought out product.
Without a little touch-up & refinement, this would be quite sella... read more >> - See all 4 user reviews Write review
