Managing hard disk clutter mostly means figuring out which files eat up all the space. Utilities like SizeExplorer Free help by pinpointing the folders and files holding you back from downloading season three of "West Wing." It's an easy-to-use disk analyzer with some valuable features.
The interface is pleasant and mostly intuitive, and there's a Help file if needed. SizeExplorer is fast: it ran through more than 170,000 files in around two minutes. The resulting Windows Explorer-like view lists each item's overall disk usage with colored bars and percentages. You can sort the list a number of ways. In fact, the program behaves just like Explorer. For example, you can browse through folders as well as open and delete files directly from the list. We also appreciate the Analyzer function's numerous reports and graphical views. This feature displays directories as pie charts as well as graphs indicating the distribution of files by file type and extension. The data is interesting, although the actual usefulness eludes us. SizeExplorer's best feature is the ability to view large files in a single list. You don't have to click through folders or compare file sizes back-and-forth across folders.
SizeExplorer Free does lack a few key features, such as searching, printing, and saving reports, and, sadly, the capability to find duplicate files. To access these options, you must purchase the Pro version ($39 to $42). As a first step on the road to hard-disk hygiene, however, the free tool is hard to beat.

does what it says. counts all files and folders. shows percentage usage.
Cons
There are no cons. Everything is great about this product. Those that are complaining are obviously not using it for what it was meant to for.
Summary
This is one of the best utilities to manage your storage. It shows the size used by folders and files. You can drill down to specific folders to see how much they are. It shows sizes and percentage of drive.

Fast scanning of a drive.
Cons
Doesn't handle the symbolic link added to Vista and 7. So, you get a repeated iteration of things like the folder "Application Data"
Summary
Can't use it to figure out which folders are hogging the drive because of the con item listed.

"Easy to Use, No Frills"

Pros
It's a pretty simple program to use... scans each HD and lets you select how to view the reports. Nothing too fancy or intense, but it's much easier than trying to get all the info via the "property" window.
Cons
There are a few display ads at the open and close of the program... nothing more than a "close" to get rid of them, but they do try to hock their product a bit.
Summary
A good free option... does everything I need/want it to do, with little to no effort. A good option for someone who isn't expecting gold.

I totally desagree with knightmanic. This software offer a lot more feature than a normal windows browser. It fact, knightmanic probably did not try the software at all. You see folder size, you have a lots of chart and reports on file distribution on the system. You can print. This application support network (most freeware doesn't). It is true that some features are blocked to promote the pro version but these are advance features, not basic one. I love this software and recommend it to everyone.

This shows up as free software, but it is anything but. None of the features that would make it worth the time are included in this version. It is just a teaser.
Summary
This should not be listed in the free software category because it does nothing better than the file brower included in windows. The features for which I downloaded it were not available. This is just a ploy to get people to pay nearly $50 for software they can't really try out. What a bunch of jerks these JSD software people are. And shame on CNET for allowing it in this category. CNET should disallow this company from fraudulently posting any additional software.

Summary
I tried a lot of disk space manager and disk cleaner over the years, from freeware to expensive commercial software, and I can tell you that this one is the best out there and it is FREE. This tool will let you find useless files quickly. The reports are greats but I don't use them often. I run this software once a week to clean my hard disk from useless junk or to find lost files. At my jobs we bought the Pro version which include a lots of advance feature like compare of scans which is fantastics. Don't waste your time with slow open source like WinDirStat or buggy freeware like TreeSize (which always crash my computer), SizeExplorer Free is the fastest and more stable out there.
