Publisher's Description
From JH Software:
With Simple DNS Plus you can host your own domain name or simply speed up Internet access by running your own DNS server. Thanks to DNS servers we surf the Internet using names such as "www.simpledns.com" instead of impossible to remember IP addresses. DNS servers translate these domain names into machine readable IP-addresses needed to locate the requested web-server on the Internet. Simple DNS Plus can easily be integrated with your Web site for ISP customer signup etc., or even a full web-based DNS solution. Simple DNS Plus is also a DHCP server; it comes with a DNS Look Up tool.
What's new in this version: Version 5.2 build 122 has fixed when serving records from a local DNSSEC signed zone where the answer begins with a CNAME-record, signature records (RRSIG) were not included for all but the initial CNAME-record.

"An amazing DNS server"
Version: Simple DNS Plus 4.0
Pros
I have purchased three licenses so far for various systems. I have been running one server for eight years and the only time it has ever failed was when my machine ran out of disk space. It handles complex text records (for SPF and DKIM). Running one instance as a backup for another is a matter of install and forget -- everything is maintained automatically.
This is a very versatile system and whenever I have needed to do something odd I've found it already supported it.
Cons
It would be nice if, when out of disk space, it could still serve DNS requests but that is a bit of an odd situation.

"Simple DNS Plus is Awesome!"
Version: Simple DNS Plus 4.0
Pros
I live in Sonora, Mexico where for at least a year DSL/Cable Internet service has been virtually useless because of frequent (like every few minutes) DNS outages lasting three to four minutes. It's everywhere, regardless of where one connects to the Internet. No DNS lookup due to spammers, malicious worms, and incompetence (though it's hard to get motivated for a DAILY salary of around $4.85). What's worse, the idiots don't cache.
No that I have Simple DNS Plus, my Internet connection behaves as though I were accessing the Internet from the United States. No more outages, and the overall access time has improved tenfold.
Well worth the $79.00

"Big waste of my time"
Version: Simple DNS Plus 4.0
Pros
Advertising and description looks good. Interface okay. But...
Cons
Never got to try it. They advertise a 14 day trial. That's not how it worked for me. I downloaded, installed, spent hours configuring, tried to start it and got a message that the 14 day trial expired. I hadn't even used it yet. The support rep says "Sorry, maybe it doesn't work on your server." "Try another one." This was a HUGE waste of time for me. Save yourself the hassle.

"Maybe not a waste ot time and money after all..."
Version: Simple DNS Plus 3.60.01
Pros
I was able to find a phone number after all on the "Contact Us" link at the developer's website, although it is not toll-free, and the issue regarding me getting the old version instead of the current version (4.00) due to a trial version I downloaded at least a year ago was easily resolved by downloading the NEW trial version and then entering my license key.
Cons
I don't know the "cons" yet, but there is a new feature that supposedly gets around the NAT problem associated with many routers, so my guess is that there are probably more pros than cons worth mentioning here. My apologies to JH Software.

"Don't waste your time or your money!"
Version: Simple DNS Plus 3.60.01
Pros
This may be "great DNS server" software as "rdeutsch" (probably the author!) claims, but you get little in the way of technical support for the price paid, US $109.00 in my case, without even a phone number you can dial at your own expense.
Cons
As above. Also, the site claims the following: If you originally purchased your license, or if you purchased a license upgrade, on or after April 10th 2004, then you are covered by the one year free upgrade protection. In this case there is no charge for this upgrade (to Version 4.00), and you should already have received your new license key by e-mail.
Since I first dowloaded the trial version over a year ago, however, I got VERSION 3.60.11 when I purchased the product on 01-May-2005, and now the developer wants an additional US $75.00 for an upgrade to the current version!

"THE replacement for MS DNS, a must for Windows ISP's"
Version: Simple DNS Plus 3.60.01
Pros
Easy to setup and use. I've been using SDNS for 1.5 years and it still rocks my DNS world ;) Has a simple but effective HTTP api for remote calls which enables you to integrate DNS management in your own software. TIP: use the free .net wrapper from Neokobe.nl for extremely easy integration!

"Great DNS server!"
Version: Simple DNS Plus 3.60.01
Pros
As a small ISP, we really enjoy using this DNS server. It is quick to learn, easy to use, it does DNS very well, and it allows us to interface with our web-site for customer signup etc.
The one time we ever needed support (help with some reverse DNS stuff), we got a detailed response from the support staff that solved the issue almost immediately.
Cons
Does not run on Linux (yet).
-
"Works well, support is spotty, some serious bugs"
Version: Simple DNS Plus 3.60.01
Pros
Installation and setup are easy. DNS concepts like SOA records, TTL, etc, are well-explained, so if you are a DNS novice, you'll learn a lot just by using this. Nice HTTP interface makes using this as a Dyn DNS server easy.
Cons
Support is very questionable. Replies take days, and when they come, they do not contain much technical knowledge. If you are a programmer, like me, trying to use this as part of an application you are working on, you will be frustrated by the "consumer" type answers you will get to technical problems.
Getting the primary/secondary mechanism to work right (if you set up a primary and secondary DNS with this product) is flakey. The system has bugs related to hanging on to WinSock ports, not zone-refreshing with firewalls enabled, and having the primary "block" the secondary as a "spammer". These things can be worked around, after much consternation, but support has been lacking in these areas.

"Excellent, simple to install and use. For one machine or a whole domain."
Version: Simple DNS Plus 3.60.01
Pros
Setup is a few clicks. It runs immediately. The default configuration should do everthing most people need.
Cons
Can't set a time to live (read the doc for non-standard configuration) greater then 9 days and 23 hours. Ther are times you might want to do this for special needs. Won't bother 99.999% of users. Needs quite a lot of RAM (20Mbytes in my case)
-
"If you know what this does, it is a must have"
Version: Simple DNS Plus 3.60.01
Summary
Really does exactly what it advertises. If you don't have a need for the complexities of bind and friends, but want a cacheing dns server to improve the efficiency of your internal LAN, this is the ticket, right here.
