    "Very interesting, but overly complex"

    May 24, 2011  |   By rtcjr

    Version: Silverfrost FTN95 6.10

    Pros

shorter programs than BASIC. Fast output. Good debugging.
Seems very powerful once you find the handle.

    Cons

Tutorial inadequate. Some illustrative programs wouldn't run and returned "RUN_TIME errors.

    Summary

I'm on lesson 6 and will continue to the end. Might prove useful. Frankly, BASIC does it easier despite longer programming. Your tutorial should have been written by a teacher rather than a computer scientist.

    "Unable to compile"

    December 19, 2008  |   By Quantumqsar

    Version: Silverfrost FTN95 5.21

    Pros

Easy installation but I have been not able to compile with your Force 2.0

    Cons

Sirs! I installed the FTN95 5.21 without problems. I also installed Force 2.0 and it seems that it is running well. But the compilation stopped before producing anything.

    Summary

I cannot tell yet. Please, give me any hint to overcome the impossibility to compile under Vista Ultimate in a Fujitsu Amilo.Anyone knows what is happening?
When I tried to compile a program my system (Vista Ultimate) stopped the process after a while and no object nor executable was created from a simple source program which writes Hello!.

"This FTN95 5.21 is fit to use for a scientific research"

    October 22, 2008  |   By soilskorea

    Version: Silverfrost FTN95 5.21

    Pros

I am much satisfied with this FTN95 5.21.

    Cons

I would like to have a full manual documents. The user guide provided was too simple.

    Summary

This product is well fited to use for scientifc research that I am involved in. In using 95FTN, I met some difficulty at start, because I used FORTRAN long time ago, say 20 years ago. And I am restart to use FORTRAN again. I would like to have full FORTRAN manual, but provided user's guide was too simple to restart FORTRAN. Anyway, I am very much satisfied with FTN95 5.21. Thank you very much for Silverfrost FTN95 5.21

"Something is wrong with the download"

    September 19, 2008  |   By Jack Robins

    Version: Silverfrost FTN95 5.21

    Pros

    Seems to download ok

    Cons

In trying to install, installer firsts opens the programs and then says that I requested total removal of the program (which i did not do). The program then proceeds to remove all traces of the installation.

    Summary

If I can get a copy that I can really and truly install, I would be glad to review its operation.

"Best way to program in Windows"

    July 26, 2008  |   By Scnet01

    Version: Silverfrost FTN95 5.21

    Pros

Built in GUI builder, scientific graphics, bitmap handling and OpenGL if you want fast and powerful Windows programming. I use all that all the time. Most rigorous error checking among all Fortran compilers based on Polyhedron tests. And with /undef and /full_debug finds the most hidden errors you suspected but couldn't find in your code for 20 years :-). Great at making fun at colleagues by finding unbelievable amount of errors, mostly small, but sometimes really serious, in their codes if they use different compilers. With multithreading it is ready for multicore processors. Capable of .NET and has own C++ where you can do such tricks as mixing Fortran and C in the same code. Is most compatible with all older Fortran77 codes. Champion in compilation speed, an order faster at least. Helpful community on the web. My preferred one.

    Cons

Mentioned above crazy amount of features and debugging capabilities came at a price that it builds not the fastest executables, but your mileage may vary. When you build larger and larger codes though you realize that being 10% or even 30% faster is not the most important factor. From my fox hole, my development and debugging time is #1. In some cases I also use Intel Fortran, which in average creates faster executables, but does not have all mentioned benefits, for potential squeezing of last drops of performance, though, again, probably this is not worth of time - each new upgrade to new fastest processor gives me exponentially more juice compared to optimization which is just linear factor. YMMV but not very much.
