Stream your media files to renderer devices.

Serviio uses a priority-based metadata extraction so that you can choose what metadata should describe your media files (audio track name, DVD cover, TV series and episodes names). These include metadata embedded into the media files themselves, locally stored metadata files (images, Swisscenter, XBMC, MyMovies) and metadata that can be obtained online. With this powerful tool you will be able to build your Serviio media library easily and effectively. Serviio enables playback of online resources like RSS feeds, live streams or web site content so that you can listen to your favourite podcasts or watch latest TV programmes published online. Serviio works with many devices from your connected home (TV, Playstation 3, XBox 360, smart phones, tablets). It supports profiles for particular devices so that it can be tuned to maximise the device's potential and/or minimize lack of media format playback support (via transcoding).

painful to setup on mac

spent a couple of hours trying to find log files, remove jar files, and update java and all sorts of nonsense based on poor (or completely lacking) setup instructions for mac server wouldn't launch (didn't stay in system tray) console wouldn't run without constant error messages (error 500) forums and FAQs are useless on these topics as they point to Ubuntu and other OS's bottomline - was up and running with Plex in less than 15 minutes wish i got my night back.... either write better / easier to use software or better instructions (yes i know how to get around in Unix), but most of the instructions didn't make any sense mac users have better things to do, or at least expect a better User Interface

After trying to use Windows Media Player and Media Monkey to stream files to my Blu-Ray player using DLNA, both of which failed miserably, Serviio worked with very little set-up required. I ran the setup file, opened the "Console", saw my Blu-Ray player listed on the status tab, selected my folders in the library tab, and then found Serviio was listed as a server on my Blu-Ray player immediately. It took a while to get everything into the library, probably because of the quantity &/or size of my files, but with a small amount of patience I was viewing my videos wirelessly. I highly recommend this program.

Pros
Just worked first time connecting NAS on ASUS RT-N66U through wired ethernet to PS3 - something Windows MS, PS3 MS & Media Server inbuilt on the router unable to do. Provided pro 15 day trial without payment - something Twonky & Plex wouldn't let me do.
Cons
None so far.
Summary
I don't work for Serviio or am I affiliated in any way with this company. It's just refreshing to stumble upon the answer to hours of frustration and at last enjoy technology without it really bugging the hell out of me. Now Serviio you can pay me if you want!
Not quite 'Free' and a Java update (to v7) broke it!

Pros
Seems to play nicely with PC and Samsung TVs. Other devices vary.
Cons
- Cannot run Serviio Console as limited user ~50% of the time - random 'service 'cannot be started' / 'is not running' errors. - Java update to v7 broke it. Considering that this was an essential Java update (and often installed-automatically) then this is uncool. - Works pathetically over wifi and doesn't give diagnostic messages that bandwidth is the issue (necessary, since TVs typically give rubbish unhelpful error messages too). Ethernet solved this last problem, but is not always practical, even for troubleshooting purposes. Besides, how bad does a given wifi signal have to deteriorate to in order to cause streaming of low-bandwidth media to fail? 0.5Mbps? Surely it can stream over just 5Mbps (not for HD, mind)? Why is the wifi standard called 54Mbps or 108Mbps when range and reliability are more important than that kind of bandwidth - and in many cases, you get neither? I love my ethernet cables, peace.

Pros
Liter on computer system resources, than Samsung Allshare. Supports podcasts via RSS. Plays 1080p content without dropped frames, compared to Samsung Allshre. (Could be because my computer is not powerful enough for Samsung Allshare), but is still a reasonable system. (Intel Core 2 Q6600, 6 Gig of RAM) Very costimable if you want to. Works out of box, if you want to just play back local video and music.
Cons
Complicated to Setup Podcasts.
Summary
Grate product, if you don't mind getting you hands dirty for advanced features. Very light don't even notice it running in back ground. Should run fine on old computers as well.

Its free and buiding up to be the best media server out there! It reminds me of XBMC but unlike XBMC you just need a DNLA device such as TV, BluRay player or Games Console to view the content. They include custom plugins (written in groovy) so you can watch Hulu (US only), iPlayer (UK), 4oD (UK) and much more. It works very well with PS3 Even if renderer doesnt support a video format, you try to throw any file, Serviio will transcode it on the fly. So your Xbox 360 or PS3 will play .mkv files even if they dont support it natively. Serviio also uses online databases such as TVDB and themovieDB to catalog all your TV and Movies videos. If you bought a new TV or device that has WIFI or network capabilities, you can use Serviio straight out the box! SONY UK now use Serviio technology for their Bravia TVs and gets full backing by Sony UK. YouTube videos will play in HD. With the latest version just out 2 weeks ago now include live streaming. So you can watch live news and channels as they happen! Yes this also includes live radio music such as SHOUTcast and TuneIn. Theres not a Media Server out there that has this much features. People still use old Mezzmo, TVersity or PS3 Media Server but doesnt have features compared to Serviio. Theres an Android app to manage Serviio remotely called ServiiDroid. Serviio is available for Windows, Mac and Linux (including NAS boxes) to share all your media. Best of all its FREE!

excellent dlna server. There is also an android app (I am sure there must be an iOS app as well) that works very well with this. I store all my videos on this server on my 2 computers and stream them onto my TV (using GoogleTV). It works flawlessly, I have experienced no issues at all.
