"Frustrating and disappointing."
Version: SOS Online Backup 5.0
Pros
Simple. Easy to start up. Almost mindless.
Cons
Where do I start? The system does not allow the user to control the backup process in any depth at all. It often takes over at times when I don't want it to. I tried to manage the times and the types of files I would like backed up, but it was virtually impossible. The system is just not robust. Also, for $80 per month, I can only back up a fraction of my machine. This product is not for powerusers or professionals. It would be fine for casual computing and people who don't want to spend time getting to know how to manage their backups. The support is minimal.
Summary
I do not recommend this product for people who have a lot of data and some amount of tech-savvy. There are better products.
I forgot to mention that I was told by one customer service rep I could not use my Mac to get my PC files, and was told I could get them, 500 MB at a time, and they would have to arrange FTP access for me to get my files. Then the CSR never responded. I will never rely on a PC magazine review again. The reviewer probably never had to restore their files or never used the system in depth. A MESS OF A PRODUCT. I hate it.

"Are you feeling lucky?"
Version: SOS Online Backup 5.0
Pros
Simple interface
Cons
extremely slow backups
admin website is very slow
buggy software
unreliable on some systems
no refunds when dissatisfied with productSummary
Note to the management of SOSOnlineBackup: The measure of customer service is how you respond when things go wrong, not when everything is great!
I needed a reliable backup solution and after reading the PC Mag review, I thought SOSOnlineBackup was it - boy was I wrong. While it did work fine on my web-server and another workstation, it flat out refused to work on my Server 2008 system. The first version I installed would only backup a single folder - the folder in program files where the SOSOnlineBackup application was installed! I worked with tech support on this issue for awhile and finally they told me it was because I was trying to backup the entire drive. This made no sense to me, but I thought "ok, I'll just backup certain data folders". They gave me a new version to install (5.0) and did some work on their end so I could start over. This version would not let log in at all - I got a strange .NET error and they could not figure it out. (Remote Desktop session #2). I then reverted back to the original version that would at least let me get past the login screen. Ok, so then I tried again, but the problem was that I needed to pause the backup during work hours because of the drain on our bandwidth. After about a week it finally reported that it was done and I assumed my incremental backups would finish in the evenings. I never, ever came into the office after that first initial backup and saw that it was done - it was always running and I had to pause it. When I looked at the files on the website many of them appeared to be 0K or 1K files, when I could stand waiting long enough for the screen to refresh. Many days, the backup would just show an error number as it had failed during the night. By this point I didn't trust the software at all and I just wanted a refund. They refused to give me a refund despite the fact that I had spent at least 8-10 with the software and 2 different remote-desktop sessions with techs to try to get it to work. I finally just told them to keep my money and good riddance. I went out and bought a 6TB NAS with backup software and could not be happier. -

"Very enjoyable experience thus far."
Version: SOS Online Backup 5.0
Pros
I have been using this program for the last two months and haven't had any issues with it. Setup is a breeze and the upload was a lot faster than I thought for about 80Gb of stuff. Customer service has been really great also.
Cons
None so far.

"Outstanding"
Version: SOS Online Backup 5.0
Pros
Simple
It just works -- and so easily
Good technical support -- very attentiveCons
Tech support can be a bit too persistent, seen in getting multiple emails to confirm that problem was resolved. Could be a good thing depending upon how you view it.
Summary
An outstanding backup program that works easily and well.

"Overall good online backup solution."
Version: SOS Online Backup 5.0
Pros
- good customer service
- reasonable price
- version feature is excellent
- multiple computer interface is very goodCons
- somewhat clunky interface
- poor documentation
- 150Gb limit is a bit low
- initial backup takes a long, long timeSummary
Overall, I am happy with SOS online backup. I am backing up four computers and am very relieved to be rid of the responsibility of having to check to make sure that each computer is being backed up regularly. I also value having the backup offsite in case of a physical disaster (fire, theft, flood, etc.).

"Not usable in a business environment"
Version: SOS Online Backup 5.0
Pros
Easy to pay them
Cons
Customer service is non existent. They claimed I could do an initial backup to an external drive (to speed up the back up of 300g of data (in lieu of doing this over a slow link) when it did not work, they then claimed they do not suipport it and removed most of the references from their site. Since I had pre paid for a year's service I figured I would keep trying to use it. Finally got the data backed up, but have been unable to make any of it share-able online. first they told me that I could not share any folder containing over 500m of data, so I tried sharing a folder with 100M of data, then they told me there was a short term problem with their server. meanwhile I decided to test the downloads for restoration. Tried to do a restore on a site with a fast (50M) inbound connection. looks like it will take 2 weeks to restore. Seems their site has a slow internet con
Summary
This product may work fine for home use and for backing up small amounts of data. But it simply does not work in the business environment and their support is simply not interested in assisting customers. Their approach seems to be to close the ticket saying there is a problem with how the customer has installed the product or using the product and to open a new ticket after the customer fixes their 'internal problems' The case the tech coul not figure out why he could not find the back ups working directory---I had the software and the working directory on the D: drive not the C: drive. Tech said I had to re-install on the C: drive initiate the backup again and then contact for more help! Go figure.

"SOS Online Backup Matches Expectations"
Version: SOS Online Backup 5.0
Pros
I chose SOS Online Backup because of good reviews in PC Magazine and the New York Times. I chose the product because I could backup 5 devices/machines; the product had good security reviews and assurances; and their web portal seems to allow recovery en masse or by individual file.
I had problems getting the product installed, so I did a live chat session with customer service. I found the representative to be helpful, friendly, and efficient. The issue was a user error: I wasn't logged in as the administrator for our computer.Cons
The initial backup is slow (probably because of bandwidth more than anything else), but I expect that will not be the case with subsequent backups.
Summary
While I haven't been using SOS for very long, my initial experiences have been positive.
-
"Excellent Product and Services. Exactly what I wanted."
Version: SOS Online Backup 5.0
Pros
Affordable. Easy to install and use. Great product support. Fast enough to not be a burden.
Cons
A couple of the menus where not as intuitive as I would have liked, but no game-stoppers.
Summary
Excellent product. Just what I wanted, for an affordable price.

"SOS works for me!"
Version: SOS Online Backup 5.0
Pros
Excellent support team helped me through the initial stages of backing up all of my data.
Cons
Like any product, there are some features I would like to see added, and SOS seems receptive to my requests.
Summary
I have one machine in my house that is the central repository for all of my important personal data. Here I am talking primarily about MY PICTURES, MY MOVIES, and MY MUSIC.
These three folders account for roughly 75 GB of data. Additionally I have about 25 GB in other personal data. Included in this extra 25 GB are all of the files I have determined to be important enough to keep down through all of my years working and playing in data processing.
I needed a reliable off site backup supplier, and SOS has proven they can handle my requirements.
