Publisher's Description
From Renoise:
Renoise is a sophisticated music sequencer and audio processing application for Windows, Macintosh, and Linux. It's a unique all-in-one music production environment for your personal computer.
Renoise's rock solid stability makes it ideal as a live jamming tool. You can map almost every part of the interface to a MIDI controller, run your guitar through a Line-In Device and distort it with native effects, or just use it as a drum machine; a sampler on steroids.
Renoise's open API allows programmers to easily extend Renoise. With a few lines of code you can add the features or tools that you always wanted but never dared to ask for.
Renoise is based on mod trackers. Mod trackers are characterized by displaying and editing music in an easily understood grid known as a pattern. These patterns are akin to sheet music, but are displayed alphanumerically instead of with musical notation.
Renoise boasts full ReWire and Jack support, FX and instrument VST/AU/LADSPA/DSSI plug-in support, automatic plug-in delay compensation, multi-core load balancing, MIDI I/O, OpenSoundControl, audio recording, flexible audio output, graphical & numerical parameter automation, modular parameter routing, and much more.
Due to its keyboard driven workflow, it makes the creation of desktop music far quicker than in a traditional MIDI based sequencer. For experienced users, and those who don't necessarily want to be bound to piano roll systems to music, it offers a refreshing approach to composing and is one of the most efficient ways to do so using a computer.
Instead of spending hours cobbling beats together with a mouse, why not do it in seconds with just a few keystrokes in Renoise? Whether you're an audio veteran or just starting out, Renoise is a fantastic addition to any bedroom or professional studio.
Got laptop? Use Renoise.

"Quite possibly the best tracker out there."
Version: Renoise 2.0.0
Pros
Capable of rivaling top-end DAW's in the right hands.
Price!
Streamlined workflow.
Infinitely expandable via VST's.
Comes with great DSP's and samples.
Complete control over your sound.
Licensing terms
StableCons
Can be difficult to someone new with tracker software.
Summary
Renoise has a great demo, so definitely check it out. The licensing terms and ability to download it from the website is great. Any computer I'm on when I get a hit of inspiration, I can DL it and get straight to production. You can use Renoise to do every step of producing a song. You get complete control for a very cheap price - HUGE bang for your buck. The DPS's it comes with are great and very flexible, and when you need something specific you can use VSTs. Best of all, you can get your music out as you want it on demand, not having to cludge around with a mouse and piano roll.
Some very popular producers use Renoise, especially within the D&B genre. Amongst these are Venetian Snares and Unter Null.
It can be difficult to people that aren't familiar to music production via trackers, so if that's you, you might want to look up some videos on youtube - they're great. -
"A bit of a head scratcher but...."
Version: Renoise 2.0.0
Pros
Cheap. Seems solid. Does what most other high end DAWs do. Apparently it's workflow is faster than most. Supports VSTs.
Cons
Confusing at first. Especially if you are used to "traditional" sequencers.
Summary
I downloaded the registered version of this a few months ago. I admit, I have done a fair amount of head scratching since then. This is nothing new of course. I messed around with FL Studio 7 for a long time before anything clicked into place in my head.
Oh yeah, the 4 stars may be temporary. I didn't give 5 as I haven't fully understood everything Renoise can do yet.
I heard good things about Renoise. Does what more expensive DAWs do for how much?? Also, I know Venetian Snares uses it. If he can make his insane tracks on it, it must be quite capable, right?
Well, yes, I am starting to understand Renoise slowly but surely. The matrix grid is VERY intimidating at first glance. I read and watched a few tutorials online and it has stared to make a bit more sense...but not completely. There's no doubt, those numbers and letters are confusing.
But, watching the tutorials, it really does seem that this sequencer can do nearly everything. I do miss the piano roll, though.
It doesn't seem that the sound engine etc is inferior in any way to other software.
Anyway, I have a long way to go, but I think I made a worthwhile purchase and all is needed now is for this old dog to teach itself some new tricks.
