"Works flawlessly where others fail"

May 05, 2014  |  By bakkler

 |  Version: R-Drive Image 5.2 build 5203

Pros

Does everything I need, and does it well where others have failed me (e.g., bare metal drive). With some previous versions of R-Drive Image, during restorations to smaller or larger partitions I had to figure out minor tweaks (e.g., resize a restored partition slightly to get it to boot), but in the new version everything works smoothly and seamlessly -- and fast, even with compression. And there are useful new features.

Cons

Customer service often doesn't seem to understand their own straightforward-but-powerful product, although FWIW they always respond fast. If you press the issue they will find out what the "real" answer is (rather than an uninformed "try un-ticking this box" kind of reply), but you have to understand enough to know why their initial response didn't make sense. Fortunately I rarely need support -- the program just WORKS.

Summary

Very dependable, has come to my rescue numerous times. And I like that version 5 continues to support restorations and file viewing/copying (via mounting an image as a virtual logical drive) from their old archive format (.arc) even though with version 5 they have moved to a new archive format (.rdr).

Updated on May 5, 2014

A "PRO" I forgot: The 30-day free-trial is 100% functional, no unwelcome surprises/restrictions. I still had version 4.4, which doesn't work with Windows 7, which I just switched to a few months ago. But after trying the new version for a couple weeks, including an easy restoration of my system from a 500gb hdd to 1TB I decided not to stray from R-Drive. (But do follow instructions carefully to avoid Windows-induced complications like disk-signature collision.) This version also lets you skip over bad sectors if you are trying to image from a failed drive.

"A very cost-efficient solution for server backups"

August 17, 2010  |  By Glkdf

 |  Version: R-Drive Image 4.7 build 4708

Pros

Its license allows the user to run it on servers for the same price as for workstations.

Cons

15 days for tests is not enough.

Summary

We use the software to backup our business-critical servers. To our best knowledge, this is the only full-featured backup/restore program which license allows its user to backup/restore servers for the price of a workstation. Yet it has all features to perform any complex backup/restore task necessary for an enterprise server: backup to a network drive, a scheduler, scripting, mail notifications, backup sets, etc. And it's stable and reliable in work.

"Good for netbooks"

July 23, 2010  |  By jkhff

 |  Version: R-Drive Image 4.7 build 4708

Pros

Can create its startup disk and save image files on any removable media.

Cons

Found none so far.

Summary

I took advantage of their 15-day free test period to try it to backup/restore the system disk of my MSI Wind netbook. What I like most of all is that their startup version can start from almost anywhere, and you may save the image file on any removable device. I use a 32GB USB flash drive for the startup disk and image file of the system disk. No need to carry an external CD/DVD drive or hard drive anymore. Now I can restore my computer to its working condition anywhere and at any moment.

"Rock-solid performance, easy to use, can boot from CD"

December 23, 2008  |  By OfficeTux

 |  Version: R-Drive Image 4.3

Pros

Generally a well constructed user interface. Initial menu is concise and easily understood. Can be run as an installed program under Windows or booted from an optionally created CD. The boot CD version supports mouse activity.

Cons

Some of the image creation options are not intuitively understood. Some context help for those options would be nice. Also, you must restore to a same sized partition as the original - which adds difficulty when using to migrate to a larger HD.

Summary

For those users that have experienced using the IBM mainframe product, DDR, this is the closest function I've found to that product. It seems rock-solid in execution (albeit sometimes appearing slower than I'd expect). I've been using it for close to a year and never had a software or logic failure.
Before using this product, I attempted to use another "Ghost" program from a major supplier. It was neither as intuitive, nor as solid. I had failures that could have been catastrophic if I had depended upon it for accurate restoration.

"Can't trust reviews"

December 07, 2008  |  By royholcomb

 |  Version: R-Drive Image 4.3

Pros

I would download and test it except the fake reviews scare me away from this software.

Cons

If you have to post fake reviews of your own software then you must not have any faith in real reviews. Scares me!

Summary

I don't have the option for high speed internet in the area that I live in so when I research software it is already somewhat time consuming but when I have to also research the reviewers that just adds to the time I have to spend and lowers my faith in the star rating system.

"Does NOT Run Properly on Windows NT"

September 16, 2008  |  By mygeek911

 |  Version: R-Drive Image 4.3

Pros

The product works well on Server 2003 for one of my clients.

Cons

Even though the requirements list Windows NT, this software will not run properly on it. Don't make the mistake I did by purchasing it then attempting to get a refund after the install. The company refuses to refund whatsoever.

Summary

I made the purchase right off since I knew the product and had used it before on a Small Business Server 2003 server. If I had known it does NOT run properly on Windows NT, even though it appears to from the description, I wouldn't have been so eager to make the purchase.
