    "Incomplete impelementation"

    June 07, 2014   |   By jimbrady39

    Version: Psst 2.1.1

    Pros

Kills the startup sound on the mac, which is it single purpose.
    It is free.

    Cons

You have to keep reactivating it as it loses control for a number of reasons.
It does not work for all mac configurations.
The upgrade does not solve these problems.

    Summary

    Too irritating to use.

"Still Works Great, only it hogs RAM"

    February 19, 2008   |   By vitoarc

    Version: Psst 2.1.1

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I love this program (see my past review Apr '07). My only problem with Psst is that it's a RAM hog. Why should a simple program that only needs to do one function, and one function only (set volume to a preset value prior to restart) use 13.4 Mb of real RAM? This may not seem like much, but let me put this value into perspective:

Activity Monitor has shown me that Apple Mail comes in at 9.41 Mb of real RAM, and Finder at 10.9. The shared memory for these two apps are greater than Psst, which makes sense. But Psst shouldn't have a greater real RAM demand than these two programs, for sure.

Therefore, I call this program a HOG! and I'd like to see the developer trim the fat on this great app.

One other small nuisance: The Psst daemon for some reason occasionally loses it's identity in the Login Items, and I must then select it again for Psst to work. This along with the RAM problem makes me downgrade this version to 2 stars for Quality/Stability.

    ciao

...try starting with the slider all the way to the left (mute). If that works, gradually move your slider up. I have mine set at the first tick. I actually wish there was a point half way between that & 0.

"Excellent adjustment of startup chime volume! ..."

    Version: Psst! 2.0.4

    Summary

    ...Five-star
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I would not do away with the startup chime but I have found it far too loud for comfort even if everybody in the house was awake.

Psst! was exactly what I was searching for: a means of allowing me to hear a startup chime at a volume of my choice. I could never understand why Apple developers did not include it in OS X.

I'm pleased that the author also included an un-installer in the download.

    Respectfully, Norm

"Psst! on Mac mini Mac OS X 10.4.2"

    Version: Psst! 2.0.1

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
On the mistatree.org website Vince states that version 2.0.1 of Psst! cannot be activated from the Finder in Mac OS Tiger - however, the current version is perfectly sufficient for me: getting rid of the startup chime because it is useless!

    "Psst! It works"

    Version: Psst! 2.0.1

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
What more do you want? All lot of people have complained about this program; there are work arounds and other ways to do this kind of thing. But Psst! just stops the Starup Chime and that's all I want. I don't want to mute my computer or hold down keys at startup. I just want the sound to go away and this program does it.

I tried this application and I didn't notice any difference in my start up volumn even though I had tried to lower it to a lower level. It just didn't do as it was supposed to do.
