ProjectForum

CNET Editors' review

by: CNET staff on October 28, 2009

ProjectForum is a simple wiki program that allows work groups to collaborate with one another in a shared space. Although navigating the program takes a bit of getting used to, it's easy enough for just about anyone to use, and it has the potential to be a powerful tool for colleagues who can't work together face-to-face.

The program is installed on a central server and users then access it on the network, with no need for separate software installation. Each work group gets its own forum where members can create an unlimited number of pages for all kinds of purposes. Members can create their own profile pages, post announcements, start discussions, create meeting agendas, make to-do lists, or use the space for anything else they can think of. Flexible organization allows users to structure their forums however they like. We especially liked that the program supports attachments, allowing users to easily share relevant documents. A set of templates gives users a starting place when creating new pages. Although the interface takes a bit of exploration to master, once you get the hang of it, it's easy to navigate and create and edit pages. The online Help file is well-written and thorough, providing plenty of screenshots and explanation. Overall, we found the program to be enjoyable to use and potentially very useful. The program's flexible setup lends itself to both utilitarian and creative purposes.

ProjectForum is free to try. It installs and uninstalls without issues. We recommend this program to all users.

From CourseForum Technologies:

ProjectForum is software that makes it easy for a team of people to collaborate. Whether your team members are across the room or across the globe, ProjectForum lets you share ideas, documents, schedules and status. Share and discuss your work online, privately and securely.

ProjectForum is workgroup wiki server software that is entirely self-contained and hassle-free to install and use. No messing around with databases, CGI scripts, web servers, config files and the like. In fact, no dependencies on any other software.

Designed for use by groups working closely together, ProjectForum is full featured and secure. Advanced features like attachments, multiple wikis, project areas, templates, branding, rich RSS support, and more are all standard. And a wide range of password authentication support, locking, tracking and version control features, plus SSL, let you create as secure and private a work area as you need.

What's new in this version: Version 7.2.1 fixed bugs where page activity wasn't available in projects, duplicating groups didn't duplicate attachment files, and corrected version number in Windows installer.
