Editors' review

If you have a PC, router, and game console, you can watch Internet-sourced video on the TV your console is hooked up to with PlayOn from MediaMall Technologies. It's software that you install on your PC; there's no need to buy any new gizmo or hook anything else up. It relays on-demand streaming content from your PC to your TV, entertainment center, or other compatible device via your Wii, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, or other compatible game console, allowing you to enjoy old episodes of "Gilligan's Island" in true couch potato fashion, remote in one hand, refreshing beverage in the other.

Speaking of sofa spuds, PlayOn is designed to be easy to install and set up, even for those lacking the nerd gene. To use PlayOn, you need a broadband Internet connection in addition to the gear. The developer strongly recommends wired connections (such as Ethernet) to avoid streaming interruptions, but home networks are getting faster and more reliable all the time, so it's an option. You'll also need to make sure your antivirus and other security software is set up to allow PlayOn to function. And function it does. Using your console's familiar interface, PlayOn finds all accessible devices and content and displays it in an easy-to-use menu. As you might guess, watching Net video on your TV is fun.

The Internet is now a primary source for content, thanks to video-streaming sites like Hulu, YouTube, and Netflix that offer movies, TV shows, and more, often for free. To access much of that free online content via PlayOn, though, you'll have to subscribe to the monthly PlayOn Premium service. With cable TV bills climbing ever higher, it may still be an affordable option for on-demand video, especially if your PC and TV lack the necessary connectors and capabilities to link up directly, such as an HDMI cable.

Editors' note: This is a review of the full version of PlayOn 2.59.3848. The trial version is limited to 14 days.

    "WARNING WARNING WARNING"

    March 28, 2014   |   By bstrec

    Version: PlayOn 3.6.63

    Pros

Nothing good to say about this company

    Cons

This company does nothing but rip you off. If you read all the review, you will see all the negative reviews are form people who can't get a refund from this company this person also. I will never do business with any company who has Jeff Lawrence, MediaMall or Playon attached to it again. This company won't give you any other contact information other than an email address for customer support, and when you do find the email address for Mr. Lawrence, good luck getting a response from him. I had to file complaints with the BBB, Washington State Attorney's office, New York State Attorney's Office and my home state just to get this looser to replay. Then when he did all he wanted to do was blame someone else.

    STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY

    Summary

STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY (MediaMall, Playon, Jeff Lawrence) unless you want to be ripped off.

    "Save Your Money"

    February 11, 2014   |   By NapJeeper

    Version: PlayOn 3.6.63

    Pros

With the cost involved and poor customer service, I can find no pros to give to this software.

    Cons

If you buy anything from them, be prepared to KEEP buying. They offer things like "Lifetime" software so you can get all those new features as they come out, then when that feature comes out, you need to buy another license. It's a sham.

    Summary

There are free options out there that will do everything Playon will do with better support from not just the developers, but from the community. Stay far, far away from this software.

    "The best media server"

    January 10, 2014   |   By chaseknows

    Version: PlayOn 3.6.63

    Pros

Unlimited plugin's. Movies, Television, Sports, Concerts, Documentaries, Children programing, Radio Stations are unlimited.
All Satellite channels are available plus more that aren't offered on Dishnet. I Have over 10 thousand movies and TV shows available plus many more. Free Network Channels that covers all broadcasters, ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and WB.

    Cons

I have no cons. From the initial download to total functionality took no more then 10 minutes to understand to actual watching. Playon is about as simple as any other application you would download and install and use.

    Summary

To start using Playon Software on my Roku took me about 10 minutes after the initial purchase and download. I went with the Life time along with Play Later DVR Software. I was so amazed with all of the Plugin's that it took me a few weeks to settle down to just watch a show. After several months later I'm still impressed with all Playon has to offer including the new Playon HD software upgrade

"great product if you know how to use it"

    January 07, 2014   |   By jimgerard

    Version: PlayOn 3.6.63

    Pros

With PlayOn you can access Hulu.com free which has much more content than Hulu+. While some networks do have mostly clips as some have complained, other networks (even cable) regularly post full new episodes. If you are a Roku user PlayOn gives you full access to your YouTube account which you can control from your couch with the Roku remote. I even use PlayOn as a DVR to catch network TV shows later which I missed when aired (I get the locals via directional antenna.

    Cons

You have to have the PlayOn server downloaded on a computer if you use Roku and if you are a sports nut (which I am not) there is little on PlayOn for you.

    "No honor among thieves..."

    January 06, 2014   |   By magichut

    Version: PlayOn 3.6.63

    Pros

It plays local content okay. Tversity and Orb do the same. It also gives you a central location to stream from.

    Cons

If they have a sale and you are within the refund timeframe, and you request the difference be refunded to you (Or you could go the other route of requesting a refund and repurchasing the product at the sale price) they will not honor it. Rather than pay you the difference back, they offer a pittance in return.

    Summary

Overall the product isn't bad. If you Wiki it you will find alot of other products that do similar tasks for less or the same. Don't expect any good support and don't expect a refund or difference in price if they put it on sale while you still have your 30 day money back guarantee. It's underhanded the way they treat customers and sad at the same time. Just because you have national attention for your product, shouldn't mean that you now ignore and screw the people that are supplying you the income. They also keep adjusting their prices based on holiday flow as well. Here is an example:
    Christmas Prices:
    PlayOn Lifetime: $59.99
    PlayLater Lifetime: $39.99
    PlayOn HD for Lifetime: $9.99
    PlayLater HD for Lifetime: $9.99
PlayOn + PlayLater Bundle Lifetime Discount: $-29.99
PlayOn + PlayLater HD Bundle Lifetime Discount: $-4.99

    Todays (1/06/2014) Prices:

    PlayOn Lifetime $39.99
    PlayLater Lifetimeremove$39.99
PlayOn + PlayLater Bundle Lifetime Discount $-29.99
    PlayOn HD for Lifetimeremove$9.99
    PlayLater HD for Lifetimeremove$9.99
PlayOn + PlayLater HD Bundle Lifetime Discount $-4.99

Note that it was not the sale price, but the actual price of the product that went down. Can't they be sued for this kind of malicious practice? I've said my two cents, buyer beware. It's better to build an HDPC or choose a more reliable streamer than mess with this.

"Do not buy unless you are a Computer Tech"

    December 09, 2013   |   By charity1230

    Version: PlayOn 3.6.63

    Pros

The number of channels would be a pro if they contained more than clips; customer service is very responsive.

    Cons

Everything else. Frequently stops and starts, constant buffering and reloading. A lot of the channels contain just clips or nothing at all. Even though customer service is helpful, they could not fix my issues.

    Summary

I do not recommend this product and I am sorry I wasted my money on a year subscription. I have not been able to watch one show entirely. For me, it is not user friendly and does not deliver the TV/Movie content that was advertised. Since I am a cord cutter, I thought this would be great. Not so.

    "Bad product, Awful Customer Service!"

    November 11, 2013   |   By Chuck_F_J

    Version: PlayOn 3.6.63

    Pros

NONE, it's garbage and doesn't do what it claims.

    Cons

PlayOn (MyMedia) is a straight rip off. Unless you are running the most elite of systems with maximum potential of memory, ram, speed, GB's, the service won't work. You can only stream MP4 files, that's if you can ever get it to work, which it rarely does. And forget about asking for your money back when you find out your system "does not meet minimum requirements". They basically tell you, too bad, no chance. They are condescending and don't care that they stole your money. The product they offer is a fraud, it doesn't work. Nothing good to say about it, it's ALL bad.

    Summary

PlayOn is an inferior product; it doesn't work most of the time, and there are other, viable alternatives. So memo to all intelligent consumers, continue to seek out a solid product and avoid PlayOn like the plague. Unless you enjoy paying for a broken unusable service and then being told to go to hell when you ask for a refund
