Editors' Review

Pixelmator for Mac offers easy-to-use image-editing tools for enhancing and touching up photos; creating sketches, drawings, and paintings; and adding text and shapes. It's powerful and affordable, and unless you require an industrial-strength image editor -- with an equally stout price -- Pixelmator may suffice.

Wide range of effects: Pixelmator offers a broad collection of effects tools, from blur and distortion to sharpening and retouching. With liquefy tools, you can twist an image or bulge it out, for example. Or warp, twirl, or pinch it.

Make your selection: With Pixelmator's selection tools, make rectangular or round selections with marquee tools or manually select objects with lasso tools. You can also make selections based on color, snap your selection to edges as you trace, or use a quick selection tool to select difficult areas.

Painting and drawing: Pick from pencil, brush, and pixel-level tools to create paintings and drawings. You have control over size, opacity, and angle. You can share custom brushes you've created with other users and can even import Adobe Photoshop brushes.

Layers: Build up your images a layer at a time, using 27 blend modes to create the look you want. With Pixelmator you can duplicate, delete, rename, reorder, and hide layers and use layer and clipping masks.

Color correction: The tool comes with a broad range of color-correction and-management settings, letting you do everything from quickly auto-enhancing an image to making fine adjustments to color correction.

Works with Pixelmator for iPad and iPhone: Through iCloud, you can share and edit files on Pixelmator for Mac and iOS. An Apple Photos extension lets you retouch Pixelmator images in Apple's photo-editing tool.

Dark interface: The tool's interface is dark and the icons are compact. Those who prefer a brighter, larger look for their apps may be put off by Pixelmator's approach.

Bottom Line

With Adobe Photoshop occupying the high end of the image-editing market, there's lots of space for a powerful but easy-to-use image editor like the $29.99 Pixelmator, which -- unless you're a professional editor -- should give you all you need to work on photos without breaking your budget.
