Editors' review

If you do any kind of digital art or design, we can't think of a reason you wouldn't want to have PicPick as your sidekick. This handy set of tools can handle many small yet important design-related tasks without the hassle of opening a full-blown design program.

PicPick has an attractive, no-nonsense interface that lists all of its features up front. And what a list it is; PicPick's capabilities include a variety of screen capture options, a color picker, a color palette, a magnifier, a pixel ruler, a crosshair, a protractor, and a whiteboard. The program also comes with a basic image editor that can handle tasks such as cropping, resizing, and rotating, as well as a applying a handful of special effects. PicPick's features aren't especially unique, but the fact that they're all bundled together in such a sleek, easy-to-access package makes this program a must-have. We were especially fond of the whiteboard feature, which lets users draw, marker-style, on their existing desktop or on a blank canvas. The options for screen captures are also impressive; users can select full-screen captures, particular windows or regions, fixed regions, freehand areas, and even scrolling windows. The program comes with an online Help file, but most users probably won't need to consult it, as the program's tools are all quite straightforward. Overall, we were impressed PicPick's usefulness and attractiveness, and we recommend it highly.

PicPick installs and uninstalls without issues.

"Free Alt to SnagIt / Malware "Conduit Search" Bundled"

    July 10, 2014   |   By Peter-II

    Version: PicPick 3.3.4

    Pros

? Excellent basic screen capture program
    ? Simple to use
? Allows for Hot Key Assignment

    Cons

? Not nearly as feature-rich as SnagIt (I use it daily)
? Comes bundled with "Conduit Search" and "V-Bates" While I'm not familiar with V-Bates, Conduit Search is a horrendous browser hijacker that is difficult to get rid of (I believe we had to completely uninstall IE & Firefox just to get rid of it).

    Summary

If you choose to install the program click on the faded "Decline" buttons when prompted to install "Conduit Search" and "V-Bates" (Beware that this option is still available with PicPick v3.3.4, but could be removed with future versions of the program.). If you fail to do that, you'll have a devil of a time removing "Conduit Search" from your computer.

    "CNET is losing my confidence"

    July 07, 2014   |   By rderuiter

    Version: PicPick 3.3.4

    Pros

    Great screen capture

    Cons

Though CNET says their programs are virus-free. Malware bytes found 3 (or was it 4) PUP's installs with this program. CNET: drop this program from your offerings, or require PicPick to remove the PUPs programs from installing.

    Summary

This program tried to install Softomate (a malware toolbar addin), InstallMonetizer (ad-ware, as far as I can tell), and SearchProtect (a browser homepage hijacker).

I'll be looking to install from other sites, if CNET can't do a better job of protecting its users.

"Just had to stop using it"

    June 30, 2014   |   By howardferns

    Version: PicPick 3.3.4

    Pros

Such a feature rich program that was so simple and fuss-free to use for taking and annotating screenshots..

    Cons

The program sometimes wouldn't open, with a message 'Failed to load resource file. Error 00001'. Then my only solution was to uninstall and reinstall it, but doing that last week, direct from the publisher's site, Avast Free detected a virus.

    Summary

After a great deal of searching for something equivalent, I found iPhotoDraw, a free annotation program that also includes screen capture, although this is not mentioned in its features. Goodbye PicPick!
