"Good tool to look at state of hard drives"
Version: Personal SmartCheck 2 build 159
Pros
No installation rewuired. Small program. Shows most important attibutes at a glance.
Cons
not much information, awkward storage of data. Does not check all paramters. Does not display TEC directly. There is another free program that I like much better since it displays TEC at a glance once it has run for a while.

"predicts computer failure / valuable!"
Version: Personal SmartCheck 1.2 build 141
Pros
You can predict your hard drive failure way in advance so that you can buy a new hard drive before it crashes. It is as simple as that.
Cons
a little on the technical side; it checks for many many variables...but it works
