PdfCompress for Mac

Publisher's Description

From Metaobject:

PdfCompress is a Mac OS X utility for reducing the size of PDF files. Just drop your file on the PdfCompress icon and it will quickly create a new, compressed PDF file suitable for sending via e-mail or posting on the Web. PdfCompress features a wide variety of compression methods (including LZW, Flate, JPEG, JPEG2000, font removal, CCITTT Group 4, dead-object stripping, metadata removal) and automaticallly chooses the most appropriate options for your file, yielding compression ratios of up to 10x or more for a wide variety of files. We do recommend you try PdfCompress with your files before you buy a license, as compression varies due not least to fundamental axioms of information theory not all files can be compressed. PdfCompress never modifies your original file, and always names result files in a manner that indicates they've been compressed, so you can be sure that your data is safe and you won't send or post the wrong file accidentally.

What's new in this version: Version 6.2 builds on the amazing compression improvements in version 6.1.

"Does what is says on the tin, shinks scanned .PDF files"

    December 14, 2009  |   By nik.jones_dotmac

    Version: PdfCompress 5.7.1

    Pros

Works well, and is normally quick when processing the .PDF files

    Cons

Don't know if its me, but it seems strange to drag and drop .PDF files onto the dock icon to process the files. There is no other interface that I've found.

    "My Most-Used Utility"

    Version: PdfCompress 4.3.1

    Summary

There's a color synk utility in Panther? LOL. Who knew? If you want quick and easy pdf compression, don't bother to check it out. Just get this. I've been using PdfCompress since early Jag, and it's knock out. The slidebar sizing is a snap, and it's probably the most stable little solution I've ever used. After relying on it a couple of times a day for a couple of years, I not only have zero complaints; I really don't know where I'd be without it. It turns pig files into featherweights, and opens all kinds of doors for emaling attachments. Really. You'll get a lot more use out of your computer, and your dial-up friends will adore you. Add the fact that it's priced right and the developer backs it with responsive and highly knowledgeable support and you've got a no brainer. Great, great product. BTW, has anyone heard of a decent compression solution for the Windows? My bro needs one. Thx.

I agree, PDF Compress is very useful under Panther. I use it to compress existing PDF files that usually have bookmarks. It works great. It keeps all the bookmarks intact, and I took a 71MB file provided by a client down to 11MB without losing any quality. Great work!

    "We bought a site license"

    Version: PdfCompress 4.2

    Summary

This little gem routinely compresses PDF created from the Print... dialog by a factor of 10. I've seen it do 20:1. Sometime's there's no wiggle room and the document just isn't getting any smaller.

A big plus when disributing this to end users is the naming scheme. PDFs that have been recompressed for screen or web usage are named appropriately. This should help keep busy people from sending a screen-resolution file to press.

Try this in demo mode on the three biggest PDFs you've ever emailed and see how small they get. See if any of those would be comfortable for a modem user to download. If they are, cut a PO for this program. Even if it goes away under Panther, I still consider our license to be money well spent.

    "Can't function without it!"

This is one of my "Can't Live Without It" apps--especially since Acrobat Distiller hasn't gone to OS X! It's simple to use and gives plenty of options on how much to shrink a PDF. And the support folks are very responsive to comments and requests. It's well worth the $$! (I've been using it since version 1.0.)
