• Poor substitute for Microsoft Paint

  Pros

  Provides ribbon interface for XP users, but with less functionality than the Windows 7 version of Paint, apart from good support for layers, with a dockable layers panel and the ability to resize images which is not available in the XP version of Paint. Can save In the TIFF format as well as PNG, JPEG, BMP and PRB formats.

  Cons

  After a brief acquaintance with Paint Ribbon I list some of the most glaring shortcomings of this program. Requires .NET Framework so is slow to load. No handles on selection to enable resizing. Undo button does not work for alterations of existing images. I cannot find the paint tool. Less tools and shapes compared to those available with the Windows 7 version of Paint. No transparency selection or other selection options available. No free-form selection available. The workspace is severely limited by the ribbon interface and an inexplicable empty space above it. No print preview available which even the XP version of Paint had.

  Summary

  Despite it's limited functionality the Windows 7 version of paint was a highly polished product like everything that Microsoft does. PaintRibbon needs much further development to match Microsoft quality, but it does offer good layers support. For other entry level paint programs it might be worth checking out LazPaint, Pinta and Fotographix.

  -None of the problems outlined in the CNET review exist anymore -Fast and simple. Great interface! -Layers & filters work well

  -There are a limited number of filters available -Sometimes crashes when using large images

  Pros

  You can get the Windows 7 paint interface on a XP computer

  Cons

  The fact that you by agreeing to install also get Bing (however, this only occurs if you reside in the United Kingdom or the United States!). Thus, I didn't have that problem from where I live.

  I was able to download the program easily and it looked much better than paint. When I tried using it, none of the controls would work. The buttons would light up and turn orange but I was not able to use the control. I give it two stars because if it did work, I am sure it would be a great program, but because it did not I cannot rate it higher.
