CNET Editors' review
Paper sticky notes have become ubiquitous in both homes and offices; they're an easy way to keep track of important information. Or they are until their adhesive fails and they disappear under your desk or get stuck to the back of some other piece of paper. We've encountered numerous programs that seek to duplicate the utility of sticky notes by allowing users to place virtual notes on their desktop, but we're not sure that we've encountered any that are as comprehensive as Pnotes. This program takes the best aspects of the sticky note concept and adds numerous useful features.
Pnotes appears as an icon in the system tray, and getting started is as simple as right-clicking on it to display a lengthy menu of options. Select New Note from the menu and a fresh sticky appears on the desktop, ready for you to type whatever it is that you need to remember. Notes come with a full complement of formatting options: you can change the font, font size, and font color; bold, italicize, underline, strikethrough, and highlight their text; and align or add bullet points to your list. Notes can also be used as reminders, and alerts can be scheduled to occur once or to repeat at specific intervals ranging from seconds to years. There are a variety of options to help you organize and find notes: you can arrange them in groups, add tags to them, and search for them. The notes come with one basic yellow skin, but you can download additional skins from the Pnotes Web site. An online Help file gives a good overview of the program's many features. Overall, we think that Pnotes is a great choice for just about everyone; it's as easy to use as the paper version, but its numerous options make it quite a bit more useful.
Pnotes comes as a ZIP file. It's accessible after extraction with no need for installation, meaning that you can keep it on a USB drive and access it wherever you go.
Publisher's Description
From Andrey Gruber:
PNotes (Pinned Notes or Portable Notes) is written entirely in C and Windows API - so it is fast and light-weight. It has flexible settings - both for the program in whole and for individual note. Skins, fonts, colors, alarms, tags, transparency level - all-in-one. Any portion of note's text can be formatted separately. There is a variety of skins for PNotes and, moreover, you can create your own one if download PNSkinCreator - a small utility for creation PNotes skins. Notes can also be skinless, that allows stretching them to any reasonable size. You may set the password, which will prevent unauthorized access to program. In this case you can also store the notes as encrypted files, so even if you lose your USB stick nobody could read them. It is possible to schedule each note to remind you about significant events by different ways. Instead of using sound files you may let your notes to speak their text aloud. One more PNotes feature - ability to join notes into groups by your choice. You can create, modify, delete and relocate groups by simple click or drag-and-drop. Changing group for each note performed by dragging it onto appropriate group. There is also special group of notes: "Diary". In order to save important information you may use FTP syncing or backups. PNotes is fully Unicode supported and translated into many languages. And, obviously, it is portable - it leaves no traces in Windows registry and can be started from any drive (fixed or flash) on any computer. Take your notes with you to any location.
What's new in this version: Version 9.3 has fixed the sending note text as e-mail body fails on special symbols and search dialog does not get focus after applying hot key.

"Very good desktop notes"
Version: PNotes 9.1
Pros
Great looking notes especially the "classic yellow".
Lots and lots of options to use.
Can be "installed" into windows, or simply used as a basic exe. without installation.Cons
None that I know of.
Summary
I have been using this for a long time and just upgraded to this new version. It operates perfectly on Win.7-64. You can download it here, or you can go to the vendor's web site and download a zip package...place the contents of the zip package in a convenient location (such as documents) and run it from there as an exe.(Place a shortcut in your startup folder to make it start with windows).
PS - Pay no attention to the review below that says "minus one star...do not download" -- I can tell you that it runs great and it will uninstall in a snap with no registry problems. The person who wrote that review is probably still using Windows 95! -

"love PNotes"
Version: PNotes 8.5.106
Pros
can be used as simply or elaborately as you want (has just about every helpful feature you can think of).
definitely comparable to other notes software that you have to pay for.
can make your own skins.Cons
can't adjust size of additional skins (but there are some skins that are bigger in size).
Summary
after trying PNotes you may think twice about paying for other notes software that don't really have more features than PNotes but just perhaps appearances that you may want to pay for.
