  This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />Over a year ago I said I was glad I wasn't paying full price for Navicat (because it was on sale at the time). But it has since become an indispensable tool. Knowing what I know now, paying full price would be worth every penny. I tried upgrading to 9. While the interface is much better, it also seems to be much buggier. It froze/crashed a few times so I decided to revert back to 8. I'll try it again at 9.1.

  This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />This a nice and well design and very convenient tool to manage MySQL database. Easy to use for a beginner in MySQL management. But, why the french translation which is available for Windows version of Navicat is not available for MacOS X version? I hope this will be added soon. It is away easier to work using mother tongue than using a foreign language.

  This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />I'm a long standing CocoaMySQL user but I just spent the afternoon reviewing all the SQL managers I could find on Versiontracker because I saw this on 'sale' today. It's FAR more polished than anything else I found (RazorSQL, SQLGringer, CocoaMySql, etc.) and CocoaMySQL, even though it's free, is far ahead of the others. (It doesn't do as much, but it does what I need well.) But Navicat offers a HUGE feature set just for managing mySQL and it does it really well. I'm glad I'm not paying full price for it, but I am going to buy it.

  This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />If you are spending a significant amount of time creating, adjusting and refining mysql databases this software should regularly bring a smile to your face. Yes, there are web-based (free) solutions, and other applications like CocoaMySql and YourSQL, but Navicat easily justifies its initial cost with its slick, helpful interface and extra functionality (over at least the first two: I've not spent a lot of time with phpmyadmin). Small bonus for academic users: the price is about 20% cheaper. Four stars instead of five because the Windows version has a few nice features that aren't (yet) implemented in the Mac version (Form View, Code Completion). The prices reflect these differences to some extent (ie the Windows version is more expensive), but it'd be nice to achieve feature parity across the board.

  This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />I have been looking for software to upload tab delimited utf8 files to my MySQL DB on a Linux server. Many of the apps I have tried don't even include the ability to upload. Navicate looks like a really nice app and it does have a very nice upload wizard that worked first time for me with no hassle but... It is so slow it would take about 40 hours to upload one of the 6mb files I have. I could not see any way to replace rather than add so this would mean the table in the on-line DB would have to be deleted then be off line for 40 hours while the file is uploaded. For my purposes it is of no value but it does look good for managing your DBs

  This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />NaviCat is a nice tool for managing your MySQL databases, has all the capabilities one could hope to find in this type of application. But unfortunately it is way over-priced, so you are better off using one of NaviCat's competitors. Especially considering that this is a tool to manage MySQL - which is open-source and free, seems at least they could have a free/inexpensive version that isn't licenced to be used in commercial environments.

I actually like the capabilities of this product, especially the SSH tunneling. However, I find the help system to be nearly useless. My first problem was that I tried to make a backup of a database. I got a completion message, but have no idea where to find the file that it creates. The docs do not illuminate. The knowledge base answer at the Navicat site is only pertinent to the PC version. I'm not going to buy it, as the docs don't give me the confidence that I won't screw up my database.

  This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />Navicat is in a class by itself. Yes, you can manage MySQL on the Mac with Webmin or phpMyAdmin, but Navicat does so much more. If you're a serious MySQL user, you'll understand why Navicat is worth it. Remote SSH logins, scheduled backups (that actually work on a Mac), all the goodies you'd expect from a commercial application with REAL live support. Runs on Mac, Linux, Windows. Even if you're not a MySQL guru (I'm not) you'll like Navicat's ease of use to get up and running (very intuitive), yet loaded with power to repair, optimize, automate. Love it. I use it on over two dozen MySQL databases on Tiger Server.

  This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />Compared to CocoaMySQL, Navicat is unbearably slow when running SQL queries. And I'm not talking about complex joins. CocoaMySQL can return a 1000 records from a simple SELECT * from &lt;table&gt; statement in the blink of an eye. The same SQL stmt takes a couple seconds in Navicat. GUI is also buggy. Can't run more than 1 query at a time without crashing. Sometimes after you run a query the button to re-run the query gets greyed out and you're stuck, so you can't modify the query and re-run it. When a warning or error msg appears, the focus stays on the rear window so you can't hit ESC/RETURN to close the error msg. Navicat doesn't allow you to view the contents of a BLOB or TEXT field after a JOIN query. CocoaMySQL does. The only feature Navicat has that CocoaMySQL doesnt is the ability to name a saved query with a better description. But other than that, NAVICAT is not the best MySQL client available for Mac. It's severaly crippled software and definitely not worth $95.

  This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />My needs were to find a client that would facilitate writing queries through a graphical query builder. Navicat does this very well. I manage several very complex databases and being able to build queries graphically saves time and eliminates the possibility for typos. <p> The interface could certainly use some work by reducing the number of windows that keep coming up for each function. They could all fit into different panes just fine. Silly little things like the fact that servers and databases open in one hierarchal pane but tables are viewed in a separate pane. And then when you open a table it opens in a new window.?. I think this could be much more elegantly designed. <p> I did come across one substantial bug where multiple records were deleted from a query recordset when I only selected one. Looks like they didn't specify a limit clause and as a result multiple records were deleted without warning. I emailed support about this weeks ago and never received a response. <p> [UPDATE] Support did get back to me today and apologized for being tardy in their response. They pointed out that the same query would produce the same result from the mysql command line, so it really wasn't a bug. However they agreed that in the GUI environment with one row selected that it would not be the expected behavior and that a change would be made for a future version. <p> Being able to filter while browsing tables without writing a query would be helpful, and is a missed feature coming from CocoaMySQL. (And is included in the Windows version.) [UPDATE] I was told that this feature will be in the next version. <p> Another feature I miss from CocoaMySQL is keychain integration. Navicat does store passwords, but should I forget the password I don't have a way to recover that lost password. <p> Application stability did seem to be an issue as Navicat has crashed or froze on me several times. <p> Overall I will purchase Navicat solely because it allows a graphical query builder. However CocoaMySQL will still remain in my Applications folder. I hate to kill one bird with two stones, but in this case it looks like I'll need to.
