There are numerous digital painting programs on the market these days, and many of the ones we've encountered have either been short on features or confusing to use (or, in the worst cases, both). MyPaint manages to pack a lot of unique and useful features into a clean, intuitive interface, and we think it's among the best digital painting programs we've seen.
MyPaint is easy to get started with. It has a toolbar and menu bar across the top of the interface, and we appreciated the fact that the program's designers managed to arrange its numerous features in an uncluttered, commonsense format. The first thing we noticed when we started playing around with MyPaint was the huge variety of brushes that it comes with, from classic pencils, markers, and paintbrushes to pixels, fur, and leaves. You'll find all the traditional brushes here and quite a few unusual ones, too. We found the program's color sampler tool easier to use than most, making it easy for us to select our desired color quickly. A scratchpad lets you experiment--and save your work--without making changes to your main project, and the program also supports the use of layers.
Beginners will find MyPaint fun and easy to use, but more experienced artists will appreciate its more advanced features, including settings for brush opacity, dabbing, smudging, and tracking. You can select brushes using customizable hot keys, which is especially useful when working in full-screen mode. MyPaint is also compatible with pressure-sensitive graphics tablets.
The program's online documentation provides a comprehensive manual as well as a quick-start tutorial. Overall, we were quite impressed with MyPaint, and we recommend it to anyone looking for a high-quality, free painting program.

MyPaint is a fast and easy open-source graphics application for digital painters. It lets you focus on the art instead of the program. You work on your canvas with minimum distractions, bringing up the interface only when you need it. MyPaint comes with a large brush collection including charcoal and ink to emulate real media, but the highly configurable brush engine allows you to experiment with your own brushes and with not-quite-natural painting.
What's new in this version: Version 1.0 includes configurable toolbar has been added with dropdown widgets for color, brush, and brush settings, floating tool windows can now be docked into a sidebar inside the main window, and Mouse and stylus buttons can be bound to different actions via the preferences.

"Simple Interface, Stunning Output"

Pros
At first glance, the interface looked so devoid of features that I just knew I had wasted my time downloading it. But I was wrong. While it's not as powerful as some of the other freeware out there (Gimp, for example), it's simplicity in place of some of the clutter that a percentage of users may never use is clearly a pro. There are good reasons to use this software (not least of which is, it's free):

If you need more than a paint program with, for instance, more sophisticated layer options, then this is not the package for you. Instead it's much more of a supplemental package in an arsenal of desktop publishing/graphics tools.
Summary
Simple menus and a lack of sophisticated tools (filters, advanced layering options, automatic correction tools, etc) make this software attractive to both novice users and more experienced graphics professionals looking for a supplemental, customizable paint program.
Online tutorials, galleries, a wiki support page and free support forums make this free software a real value for newbies and pros alike. -

It's not Photoshop. It doesn't work like Photoshop. That might annoy some people (doesn't bother me). It appears to lack some features found in pay-for programs.
Summary
I own Photoshop, Manga Studio, and Paint Tool SAI. As an artist, I mostly use Manga Studio because I can make incredibly smooth lines with minimal effort in that program. I also like Paint Tool SAI for how it blends colors. I like MyPaint for the wide variety of brushes, but specifically for the pencil brushes. At my heart, I'm really just a sketcher. MyPaint is the first program I've come across that--"out of the box"--is EXCELLENT for sketching.
If you are a "poor starving artist" you should definitely try this program! Heck, even if you're not poor or starving, give it a try! It's just plan fun to use. And I think if you're a good artist to begin with, you could create some really amazing stuff with a program like this. (Remember, pricey programs and expensive tablets won't make you a good artist, only practice and creativity will.) -

It has many brushes (and that's good). It has layer support. It looks nice. And I could easily integrate it with my drawing tablet. Make your art as big as you need. Good for sketching too. Stable. Free and Open Source.
Cons
Sometime it crashes for some unknown reason, but this is rare.
Summary
The program is very good. It's very fun, and i certainly had fun with it. I use it to sketch things, to learn more about art and concepts, and i really do love it. Many brushes to pick from, which allows you to create articulate effects. If you have a drawing tablet of any kind, be it Wacom or not, this program is very fun to play with. If you're talented or good at art, this program will be very useful for you! No Doubts!
