Editors' Review

Firefox for Android is quick, responsive, and gives you control over your privacy. If you want a secure browser, it's time to download and switch.

Focus on privacy: During setup or later through settings, you can have Firefox block trackers, control how Firefox handles cookies (accept them all, exclude third-party cookies, or exclude them all), and automatically clear private data when you quit.

Password management: Firefox can save the usernames and passwords you use for online services. To keep your information saved, you can set a master password to unlock your data before Firefox automatically fills it in.

Extensions: Just as you can on the desktop side, you can add extensions and themes to the Android version of Firefox to handle small tasks and customize your browser. Firefox's ability to handle mobile extensions differentiates it from the mobile version of Chrome, which does not support add-ons.

Choose your search engine: You can set your default search engine easily from the settings window. By default, Firefox uses Yahoo, but Bing and Google plus others are available as search options.

Sync across browsers: With a Firefox account, you can sync bookmarks, history, tabs, passwords, and add-ons across all your Firefox browsers, mobile and desktop. Log in to your Firefox account wherever you use Firefox to have the browser automatically sync settings.

Easy to navigate: Firefox for Android uses what Mozilla calls the "Awesome Screen" that lets you swipe from your top sites to your bookmarks and onto history. And as the mobile version of Chrome does, you can tap the Tab button to select an open tab or open a new one.

Smaller market share: While Firefox holds its own in speed and usability against the mobile versions of Chrome and Safari, Mozilla's mobile browser has a much smaller market share, evident by its limited range of browser add-ons.

Bottom Line

Firefox for Android is a more-than-capable mobile browser, putting you in charge of your personal data and letting you sync your settings across Firefox browsers. It may not have the largest market share -- Chrome can make that claim -- but in many other ways, it offers a better mobile experience than Google's Android browser.
